Usually, the PO chooses one person and if that person is non-townie, they are killed.
The way we've been playing it, however, the PO works more like the Detective does usually.

And before somebody tells me that I'm talking about the Vig, no, the Vig kills who he kills and is really just a Serial Killer who wins when the town does.

I'd hate to be a stick in the mud, but...

Are you sure there are enough people who want to be in specialized games? Maybe just add in note asking people to PM you if interested. (That way you have something to bring to Shiney.)

Using myself as an example (how dirty sounding) I'd like to get in on another game, but I have no clue what Soldiers of Light is, and I've never played .hack. That shouldn't even come close to stopping you from trying though.

Wow, I sound like an asshole. (Please, don't take this the wrong way. I'm just trying to help. <--- call of the asshole)

Good point TWG, but no matter the name, it is still a mafia game. It works the same. Just because you throw in a different title and give roles names doesn't mean you are stopped from actually playing the game.

The rules are the same (Sans Newb's little inversion) so the only thing you would be left in the dark about is why the roles are named like that and a little of the death posts.

Not that big of a deal, but whatever.

Well you seem to imply in your post that your's would have elements of roleplaying about it. And since that rp would involve knowing your character and/or role...

And whether you do or don't, I feel this should be made well known before any game starts.

Thanks for being cool.

I think I'm missing where she said that. I see the character list, but that doesn't mean you'd have to RP as that. Heck, after the first Mafia game I don't think anyone in their right mind will ever RP again. She was just saying how she would specify the roles.

Really, making a 'themed' game is, as pointed out, no different from any other mafia game. Having a theme just allows for cooler death scenes...

Of course, there is something else I feel I should point out to potential-game runners: You don't have to feel limited to the roles I've shown. In fact, even in SP I'm using a basic (well, semi-basic) set-up compared to typical games at other forums. Newbs PO definition (which is still wrong, neener neener) could be a justifiable role along with a real PO.

Theme games allow you to be creative as GO, not only in terms of death and lynch scenes but in created roles. Say you want a role that acts as a one-shot vig: all you'd have to do is look at your source material and pick an archetype that would flavorfully convey someone who could kill someone they thought was untown, but then be a normal powerless townie afterwards. Things like that.

I'm going to try and find a list of possible roles to spark the imagination and link to them.

And now I know. And knowledge is power! And knowing is half the battle! And [Another cliche!]

I will think on this.

Something along the lines of imposter with Chi. Were he can copy one non team based person once every turn and only wins when he is the last one. Replace the Serial killer and all.

And something Cult leader based. Hmmm...

Link to a smattering of possible roles (scroll down), and some more 'advanced' games to peruse over for ideas.

And I still say that what you're calling a Police Officer is really a Detective.

As for role ideas, my personal favorite is the Frame Artist, a Mafia aligned character who can make a townie look like a Mafiate to the Detective.
