If I remember correctly he was more or less a good guy. The two brothers talked with him regularly and he wasn't one of the bad guys. Granted it's been a few years since I've seen the movie but that's what I remember. I'm not clear whether 42 is playing out his role of being this guy or whether he's faking the cursing-syndrome in order to get a "all clear" signal from the rest of us.
