Aww...the Scary Stpry books already got mentioned. Ah...the memories of my older sisters horrifying me to tears with those books.
One that I haven't mentioned that I read growing up was the Chronicles of Prydain. Characters with totally unpronounceable names (Fflewddur Fflam?) and the absolute hackjob that Disney did with the animated version not withstanding, this was one of my favorites as a kid. And let's face it, an invincible army of zombies is pretty hardcore for a kids book.

I actually started with some graphic novel like things of classic Vern stories in like 4th grade then moved on to the full version by 5th grade. From the Earth to the Moon, 20000 Leagues, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in 80 days, and such. Then quickly branched out into H.G. Wells and from there discovered Piers Anthony and Terry Brooks before I managed to get out of elementary school. Though some of my favorite reads would probably actually be the Wizard of Oz series just for how absolutely crazy it was while still being totally consistent. Though the Landover and Xanth series are a really close second.
Oh and once around that time period I tried to read this one book that was a compilation of the Illiad and the Odyssey. It was great for awhile and then suddenly it started to really drag and I couldn't finish it. |
