speaking as someone thats been on both sides many times, its mostly psychological thing. Its hard for a GM to become completely detatched to plots and characters he's worked on. Its rough when one guy throws you a curve ball and destroys it all. Especially when you now have to completely rethink your plan. Still a good one shouldn't be trying to kill the players, if that was the point he'd just go "rocks fall everyone dies". But they should be challenged, should be a chance for death if they do something dumb

Players it varies abit more. They are meant to invest and always try and win. Though cheating is never good. But that goes for anything. Still its hard not to use out of character information when it comes up. Its why I typically try to make intellegent characters so I can justify knowing things.

I once was a DM for a guy who was convinced I was trying to kill him. Well, first he complained that everything was too easy for him, then when I came up some truly challenging situations, he accuses me of trying to kill him. Hey, if I wanted to kill him I would have just ran the Flesh Colossis as it was in Epic, even after I realized how overmatched he was. I was just thinking at the time: "My PC is now at level 28, this monster is a CR 28, he can get a good amount of experience points." And I did force him to deal with a modified version of Terry Goodkind's Chainfire, which threatened the existance of the entire universe, but he managed to reverse it, taking a Box of Orden from the First Matron of a Drow city, and another from an Infernal and a couple Belors as well as the crazy archavist who had intiated the spell in the first place. He was able to handle it. Yet for some reason he became more convinced that I was trying to kill him. Oh well, anyone interested in having me for their DM?

I have never thought the DM wanted to kill me. I mean, the DM's job is to make the game difficult and provide challenges for you. Cocking that up just makes things stupid. A challenging and difficult game is great. Sure it sucks to die but its part of the game.

In my exalted campaign the Zeniff practically seduced a River God that we wanted to speak to.

That and now we're in a forest burning it to make the Forest God angry enough to face us so we can kill him.

And It's the DM's job to make the players believe he is out to kill them. If they don't live in the constant belief that the second they turn their backs on me or my NPC's that they'll be fleeced dry and slaughtered, I'm not doing my job. Prepare for betrayal, be joyful when it doesn't happen.

Every game with me is like a preparation for a CoC game.

That's actually true in the Exalted campaign I'm in. The circle/group has had some training with the Cult of the Illuminated and we're traveling with an "adviser" who is actually a Sidreal. (My character only slightly suspects, the others aren't sure what he is.) And we also have some friendly Dragon Bloods with us. so if we do go against the npc's, we're dead.

In one of my groups many 3.5 campaigns, our duty was to infiltrate an enemy city and go to choice locations, performing a task at each one (Destroying the tracks of a supply train, meet up with an inside man, and return with his information were just some of the goals). We were entrusted with the mission more or less because I was playing a ninja, and having something like +10 jump, climb, and the feat that lets me combine them made me a better acrobat than the rest of the party combined.

We bought out the remaining supplies of our employer's alchemist fires (Something like 75 fires between six of us), then place them three to a sack, and covered the sacks in grease. We broke up once inside the city, my ninja jumping a gate to the trains while the others, under the guise of merchant lost in a new city, wandered close enough to the inner walls for the informant to find them.

I've got three of the sacks of alchemist fires with me, as well as two rust cubes. I dodge the guards and reach the train, applying the rust cubes so that the train will work just long enough to get speed before it'll break down and crash just outside of town. Then one of the guards spots me. We're something like level 7 characters, and one guard would probably be able to fight our entire group of six single-handedly under normal conditions.

I nail him with a sack, then use my ninja abilities to run soundlessly away as the other guards come to see what the hell happened to their burning companion.

Around this time my companions have completed their other tasks, including the bonus objective of providing a distraction from inside the city so our employer can march on them tonight. Basically they firebombed a barracks and a guardpost with most of the sacks of alchemist fire, keeping a couple that they lobbed at pursuing guards. Along the way, we find the stables, except they're unusually large. I stop in to check, and see giant size horses that were used to intimidate the employers' army. I lob my last sack of alchemist fires into the stables, and the resulting panic of the horses causes them to trample a large portion of the city as we make our escape.

I scale one of the guard towers from the inside, using my grappeling hook to rappel the rest of the way down just as the rest of my party breaks through the gate from the inside, using their disguises to get near the guards before knocking them out and opening the large steel gates. The two armies are already fighting at this point, with the enemy side winning through use of catapults and ballistae. Despite it not being in our contract, we start killing the crews (They're all low-level drafted soldiers, so they died in one hit most of the time) as we break the weapons.

Eventually, a third army of undead show up just beside the ballistae, and cause mass confusion as they begin to resurrect all the people we kill along with the higher level soldiers we recruited. Our only option was to head north into enemy territory, around the battle.

That train I sabotaged? We found it wrecked and tipped not too far away. We killed the crew via one of the guys hijacking a Warjack inside and ripping the guards apart. Turns out we'd found a prototype model that they were about to try out before this whole mess started. They'd decided to send it home after the fight turned hopeless, and in their haste didn't bother to check the train (They assumed I'd only wanted to steal it, and never checked the train itself - The person in charge of the train turned out to be a recurring villain that we'd humiliated on several occasions). We took the long way around back to our employer's city, where we were met with a fucking parade in our honor.

We got the DM to admit that we S ranked his mission harder than he thought possible. Also, we aren't allowed to buy alchemist fires anymore. In ANY campaign. It's been, like, two years.

Our characters all retired with more money than most nobles in wealthier nations. Well, except the Paladin. I was a chaotic evil ninja, and him and I had it out at one point. Nice thing about CE ninjas is that they have no problem slitting a guys' throat in his sleep.

They never proved anything

Bumping in hopes of hearing more from Evilness...

Also, the Exalted Circle last night were facing a Forest King and his minions last night in our session. The Dawn and the Twilight went both into limit break, it was awesome. Basically his minions had been attacking a town that is governed by a Flame Duck elemental that is our ally who is out of favor in the Celestial Courts, and so the Forest King decided to take advantage of that and was trying to destroy the town.

So in making our plans to attack him and stop his attacks, we note that there is a river that travels through 1/3 of forest. 2/3, to the north of the river is where his Sanctum lies and 1/3 to the south of the river. So we decide to visit the River God, where the Zenith caste dances spectacularly to get the attention of the River God, and upon agreement to train the girls of the town to come dance for her, the River God gives us a tear that if we put in the river at night, the north side of the river will flood.

So the next night we do that, we put the tear in the river and the next morning we travel to the southern third of the forest lighting everything a flame to get the attention of the Forest God. So pretty soon about 20 Forest Spiders come our way, which we slice into. The majority face the the Dawn and can't seem to hit him, so they try unnatural mental influence and he limit breaks. He has Red Rage of Compassion as his virtue flaw, so he's attacking the spiders as they're causing the most pain and suffering currently. That is until the Twilight casts The Titan's Icy Breath (Insta-permafrost to 10,000 square yards of foliage!) with him in it, shouting before he cast for him to get out of the way. Granted the Dawn didn't get hurt by it, but the Red Rage of Compassion triggers the Dawn to attack the Twilight (Who luckily has Bronze Skin up), which triggers the Twilight, with the Heart of Flint flaw, to limit break (5 successes on 4 dice on a compassion roll).

And about this time we notice a small army of stickmen coming with the Forest King, who start swarming. By this time the Twilight's follower/Air DB sorcerer had cast Stormwind Rider and so the Twilight jumped on up. With the Night caste in the Whirlwind as well, she unleashes a spectacular archery shot (Basically a Combo with Essence Arrow Technique, Rain of Feathered Death and a couple of other charms) that slams into the Forest God, killing him with 18 levels of damage (28 dice of damage). The stick men run away after that and we try to rescue those we can from the Dawn caste who, without a target, has begun to smash the trees and everything around him. In the meanwhile, the Twilight in his limit break condition for efficacy finds a stick man(thank goodness for spirit cutting attack) and beats him up to find the Forest God's sanctum. Upon finding it he unleashes sorcery after sorcery (Death of Obsidian Butterflies and Titan's Icy Breath) to reduce the grand sanctum into a hovel.

And then to end the session returning the next day to the town to celebrate and train some girls in dancing.
