DVD audio is pretty close. Aguably close enough to not notice the difference. I think it's more of an authenticity thing. Records contain the EXACT sound wave of the music scratched right into the vinyl. CDs and DVDs contain digital information of an approximation of the sound wave. Plus, CDs and DVDs cut off very high frequency and very low frequency to save memory. If you REALLY crank the bass with a cd, you'll notice it.

You need a high end system to get the most out of vinyl, but I guess you could say the same about didital music storage.
