No. I own a legit copy of Half Life. After installing it and entering the CD key pre-steam, I'm not asked to enter it again after converting it over to Steam. I've installed HL 3 times like this, and haven't had to give my CD key to steam, ever.

Have you done this recently? I wonder if it is only a new thing that you are required to enter it. You're lucky, in either case.

Seriously though, CS is probably the only first person shooter that I enjoy on the same level. Quake 2 LMCTF was close, back in the day. Unreal2k4 doesn't do it for me at all. Maybe this Doom 3 will change things.
