They yoink Black Mage's hat, and it turns out he's a tonberry. In later Final Fantasies - I think they first appeared in 3 or 4 - tonberries are these green, robed critters that sloooowly approach your party, and if you don't kill them before they get close enough they unleash stabbity death on you.
