I think we have a habbit of making things that require the reader to do some work.

Honestly I love stuff that makes the reader (player, viewer) do some work but there is such a thing as giving your audience too little information. Sometime before the exact moment they become significant would have been a good point in time to introduce those blue ribbons, for example.
