We'll give the doc a two shot Remington Derringer, it isn't much of a gun compared to the revolvers and rifles but it serves well as the civilized man's "Just in case." option.

Anyway a few notes on medicine just to make sure things are absolutely clear. At the time of the late 19th century it was still pretty crappy. The germ theory of disease is cutting edge, but there are no classifications for the germs and their diseases yet and no antibiotics to treat them anyway. Your typical doc is a fairly glorified surgeon and will be doing much cutting and burning to keep the infection staved and very little of the sewing back on. Medicine was also not so organized as today with things like heroin and opium(under the disguise of laudanum ) being prescribed for outlandish quantities of things. Miracle cures were the thing these days, so if he gets his medical info from medical publications his own views will be just as radically wrong. Still as long as he has a good surgeon hand he should serve to keep everyone alive...but one or two might end up junkies.
