My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is easily argued to be an all-too-rare example of how to update a retro cartoon the right way. It brings clever self-aware humor, a more streamlined (and even cuter) art style, strong characterization, and (egads!) an overarching plotline. The pilot proved an overnight sensation on the internet, leading to piles of fanart, countless threads worth of speculation and discussion, and lots of males having existential crises about enjoying a "girl's cartoon" so much.

You know how people describe certain things as so manly, it will get a girl pregnant just by looking? This is the inverse of that.

And it's good.

I was too young when the original MLP was on, so let me say that in no way is it nostalgia that is influencing my opinion. It's ridiculous, and a tad kiddy and cliched, but it's all done really well with characters that fit into the common roles without being dull or annoying, and a genuinely developed fantasy setting.

Go. Watch the pilot episode. Let your mind be blown.
