I have the feeling that Bard's disappearance was preplanned. That's why he actually makes so little impact or is flat out ignored in most of the dialog.

Or your suspicions are correct and people are just photoshopping in bard to screw with you. I'm not really sure since this whole "missing bard" thing must have happened between the year or so I stopped reading 8bit. I honestly don't remember him in any of the earlier comics.
