Jal had given up on Jade and began listening, and reading over Ralts's shoulder when the book proved to be more than just a book. He wasn't entirely certain what to make of this. Would selling it be slavery? Why would someone want it? What kind of powers did it have? Did it really want Ralts's soul, or did it want something else? Who was this Ciaran, and if he was an emperor how'd he end up in a book?

Either way, he thought, and said, "It's an intelligent entity, whatever it is... we should be able to reason with it. We could tell it why we were sent here... I'm certain an emperor wouldn't want to be owned by another man."
