Dual Core only runs one core
Well shit, I may have just fried my cpu.
I've been running some very cpu-intensive processes for the last few days using only one core to reduce heat, and now when I go into "System Information" it shows Intel Dual Core 7200 @ 2.0GHz, but under it it says it's currently running at 997MHz. It used to say 2.0GHz also. I checked my chipset and BIOS for updates, but both are up to date. In Hardware Manager it doesn't come up with anything out of the ordinary. I have an HP dv6000 laptop running Windows XP. I've done a massive Google search, but come up dry. Is it possible that I destroyed one of the cores? Or would the entire processor go at once?

I don't think its possible to fry a single core also the clock speeds of the cores don't work like that both operate at the same clock speed sounds like you have something wacky going on settings wise

I agree. You can't really fry "One Core" on a multi-core chip, since both cores are on the same chip. It's a bit hard to describe, but I promise, it's a setting error in your dirty, dirty Ubuntu.

It's only happening in XP though ....which actually rules out hardware, come to think of it.
I think it might have something to do with the Viagravirus, or leftovers of it.

So you're getting the correct speed listed in BIOS and when you boot into another OS? Or is it just stepping down in Windows to conserve energy?

If it's just stepping down, then it's exactly what Bob was asking me about earlier, for lowering power consumption and heat output. :P [/irony]

but hey maybe it's not
Oh, if you had him alter the power management options, it's probably that...
