Laptop screen issues

Ok, my screen for my laptop has been giving me issues as of late. It'll just flicker, and then just go out, like I closed the lid to it. Only way to turn the screen back on is to close it and open it back up. I don't know if it's just from the fairly hard life it's hard (Spent a year in the desert in Iraq, bounced around a plane a couple times, moved across the country, and spent a little bit of time in storage, unused. The laptop in question's a Fujisu, about 5 years old. Any ideas why it's doing that, or would I be better off just getting a new laptop? (Which I'll probably do anyway once I get a job)
