Serious "Girls Aren't Nerds!" or "Girls On The Internet Aren't Real - They're Aged Truckers"

So here's the trucker penis comment explained:

Also, my older brother linked an Escapist video on FB, which tried to talk about the idea of sexism in nerd culture. The video mentioned a "fighting game coach" named Aris Bakhtanians. (Linked to an article about the incident.) He also got in a slam at Starcraft.

Anyway, here's the video that was linked to me.

Anyway, I was intrigued, 'cause I only really ever hang out here while I'm online. (Or any number of sites that want a credit card number, but that's a topic for another day.) There really isn't any sexism on NPF, nor in my household, or workplace. I know that sexism is still a thing, and it's still around, but it's become a societally charged issue - you're likely to be crucified by your HR or PR department if you let loose with the misogyny or misandry.

I have to admit that I looked up the word misandry.

But with the onset of some political candidates and some businessmen walking a thin line, I thought it would be interesting to talk about not only sexism in the "Nerd Culture" as much as sexism in general and how North America is going to view the issue in the next five years.

Also feel free to talk about other countries and their anti-women laws.

hahaha I love how the moment I say I'm leaving some age-old quote I made at some point in time (I don't even remember when) is dug up to suggest I'm misogynistic or something

I'm tempted to imagine that Seil just kept this quote for all posterity, holding onto it in the hopes that I'd vanish and then he could totally slander my reputation

...Oh God what the fuck am I even doing here
Why the fuck do my paranoid conspiracy theories even matter
MODS quick, temp-ban me or something

I was actually surprised by the quality of the commentary in that video. Thank you for that link.

NPF is one of my favourite online hangouts partly because there is very little sexism around here and when it does appear it usually gets smacked down.

It's important that there is continued dialogue on sexism and feminism because it's often dismissed now. Women have the right to vote and are considered persons and can work etc. so often people use this as evidence that sexism has been eradicated when it so very clearly hasn't.

The burqa thing had its own separate thread and it still enrages me that people think punishing women for what they wear- whether they're covered from head to to or barely covered at all- is how you abolish systemic sexism. Like, what the fuck. It really speaks to a lack of understanding about the issue. Mind you, I'm talking about the burqa in France specifically, not say, Afghanistan where you don't have a choice.

That's the gist of it: choice. Freedom to express oneself. To say that the women who wear niqabs or burqas in public in western countries because they are forced to is jumping to conclusions. There was an article in the Toronto star where a woman wrote that she actually enjoys wearing her burka because it meant she could be lazy and wear her winnie the pooh pajamas underneath it. I'm not making this up. Isn't it just a little presumptuous and hypocritical of the government to attack these women on the basis they're being oppressed, when it is the government taking away one of their freedoms?

It just stems from leftover imperialist attitudes.

Also I don't get the point of quoting snake. Is that comment supposed to be seen as misogynistic? Because it's true 95% of the time, unless girls asking for the size of your dick is the hip new thing and I'm behind the times.

Edit: Here is an article about a single muslim woman who chose to start wearing a burqa because she wanted to.

Quote:
[...] Nobody ever forced me to wear the full veil and I have been wearing it for around 10 years now.

In fact, very few of my friends actually wear one. There are, of course, situations in which some men force their wives or daughters to wear the burqa but, believe me, these cases are a very, very small minority [...]

For those of us who are believers, we just want to do God's will and live by the sacred text, so what any man says has nothing to do with that.

I am testament to that as I don't have a husband and I practice my religion freely, that's why I'm always shocked when people say it's the husband who forces his wife to wear a burqa.

It is actually the case that a lot of men in France do not wish their wives to wear the full veil because when they go out, they are insulted or attacked and their husbands don't want them to be put in that situation. [...]

Why am I, as a Muslim woman, targeted unfairly, when there are less than 2,000 of us in France who wear the burqa? Where is my freedom of clothing or expression?

France prides itself as a country that upholds the rights of man but where are my rights? Why am I not free to wear what I want?" [...]

I have been wearing the veil in France for years and it has never been a problem, I use public transport like everyone else and I've never had any problems.

Although, it can be quite strange when I'm on a bus for example and people say to me: 'You poor thing, we feel sorry for you.' And I wonder exactly why they feel sorry for me. [...]

I really believe that France is scared of Muslims, which is the motivation for this law, but people shouldn't generalize as not all Muslims are the same. [...]

And whatever the outcome, if France succeeds in banning the veil on its streets, I will never take mine off. My freedom means a lot to me and if this law is passed, I would rather move to another country where I can worship in peace.

I'm reasonably certain Snake has been one of those people asking about member sizes, and I'm also reasonably certain he will get mad at me for posting that and tell me why in a detailed fashion if he reads this.

But he shouldn't read this, because he shouldn't be here, because he has exams and shit. So go away! No, no stop. Don't type that. Scroll that mouse over to the top right and yeeah, there you g-
