Dreadful Edgy Comedy and Stand up

CK has been around for a long time, but it's been maybe a few months since i actually started getting into his material and the guy has a couple of really funny, REALLY edgy pokes and ideas that just drag a giggle out of me...

Of course, we have Carlin... as we have many of the old great comedians, but what you guys enjoy? What is funny, what is edgy and where is the line?

For me, is delivery and timing... i mean, again, Louie CK... he made a 9/11 joke... but the way he made it, the timing, the length the setup... it was just so pitch perfect that i couldn't help it but laugh... more recently Dane cook made a Joke about the TDKR Shootings... and it was just not funny and was actually quite stupid.

So, c'mon... Walk the dark edgy of comedy, what tickles your funny bone?

No. It hasn't.

Well, I was being facetious anyway so yeah, no it didn't.

Here, have some rape jokes everyone:

Daniel Tosh had a rape "joke" recently which basically lacked any kind of actual joke structure so I don't think that particular one is acceptable because it didn't even have a point.

In his latest interview on the Daily show he said he made a Tweet about something else entirely and wasn't aware about that Tosh thing, until he came back from his trip and the newspapers were claiming that he was defending tosh over a Rape joke he didn't knew about...

All and all, his stuff is really funny when it's funny, i haven't really seen a segment yet where i couldn't chuckle at something

Also, Gay Rape jokes, since Magus set the tone

I think your quote lacked Krylo's post title so I was confused but anyway, yeah that was a funny segment because apparently he saw some random Daniel Tosh clip and did a tweet to Daniel Tosh where he was like, "Hey dude you're pretty funny" and everyone took that as some kind of solidarity with him due to his recent rape-joke gaffe and Louis C.K. was embarrassed because it made him look like (more?) of an asshole. All because he pays close to zero attention to the internet.

I mean it's like if you're going to talk about edgy comedy might as well go straight to the rape jokes.

That never happened. Really shitty coincidence.

Daily Show interview shortly after that

EDIT 2: Unless he came and defended him for realsies after that interview.

That wasn't actually that thread! You should try reading it sometime, it's actually pretty good as far as threads go. But also let's keep that discussion in that thread and not this one.

Also, Magus, I know this is a thread for off-color jokes, but I don't think we're ready for some pretty awful rape jokes just yet.

EDIT: or, preferably, ever

Whenever I see the word "edgy" associated with any kind of art form, especially comedy, I just cringe and/or roll my eyes. It's really, really hard to chart the line between "edgy art" and "being a dick." More often than not I think people fall on the "being a dick" side of that line.

Rape jokes, for example. There is a difference between a joke discussing rape and a joke trivializing and normalizing rape. But so, so many comedians either can't see the difference or just don't care, and people who don't make a living with comedy are, as a general rule, even worse about judging that difference. So a "rape joke" that doesn't trivialize or normalize rape is a rare, rare creature.

Smart, socially conscious comedy that actually challenges us to grow in socially touchy areas (heh, dick joke) is... just super hard (HEH) to come by, and the vast majority of comedy that claims to be "pushing the envelope" or "edgy" or whatever is actually just contributing to a culture that accepts horrible, harmful ideas and makes excuses for the people who act on them. Worse, it's often done in a spirit of "Look at me, I'm a pioneer, ya'll are just timid little sheeple listening to the man tell you what's polite to say!" (Louis C.K. in particular is really bad about this. Don't get me wrong, the man is funny as golden shit most of the time. But every now and then he gets on his misbegotten little "free speech" tears and thinks that he should be able to say whatever he wants on any topic and people should laugh and pat him on the back 100% of the time.)

So that's what I think about the line. In some cases it may be wiser for us to just go nowhere near it instead of confidently striding up to and over it without a good reason for that confidence.

No, rape jokes, much like menstruation jokes, are pretty much never acceptable. Period.
