"The poet"

What defines a poet? This one man believes
That the definition of poet is not in the breeze
But rather something dark, secret and deep
The blacker of emotions that usually sleeps
So, this 'poet' writes this and even more
Why, he has taken the poetic world by storm!
Huh, and how did he come by this 'inspiration'?
Like poems are all about stanzas and complications
Believing that he knows how poetry is founded
The drivel that he writes continues, compounded
He's missing out on oh so many things
Start to finish, all sorrowful endings
Never seeing the lighter side of life
Never seeing more than pain and strife
Poetry is not defined by how dark it seems
It's about our thoughts, futures, and dreams!
Nothing defines a great poem more than that
It's all about our ideas, that is fact!
And lo, this poor lost lonely man
Would revolutionize the poetry span
It's all dark, sultry, shouldn't be touched
Yet not ever on the other side has he brushed
Sadness is his cloak, loneliness his crown
Looking from that mountaintop, creased in frown
How sad, to him we give our pity
For to him poetry must never be pretty!

It's... A multi-formed poem. I think it's a little bit... weird... And may be at times complicated. It's a little bit in reference to "Dead Poet Society", when the teacher, Mr Keating, tells his students that what some PhD said is... wrong. Basically what this poem says is there is no one way for a poem to be presented, or read, or judged, so keep an open mind. It was inspired by BlackMageGirl's poem, which is right above it. without further ado...

How a poem is to be perceived
A poem to be good must have rythm and rhyme,
And fit in a box; the same every time.
None of this rubbish, freeform emotion,
That is absurd, and a terrible notion.

Its greatness be seen on graph's x and y,
These are the rules to measure them by:
x for the subject, and importance it bears,
And y for the art, the mathematical cares.

The larger the area the graph contains,
The better the poem, only one thing remains,
These are the views of the learned and wise,
Who have lost all their love, it's them I despise.

Why, I wonder, should we make it so complicated,
To share a feeling,
A dream,
To show beauty and pain,
Happiness, sadness.
When love of life,
Emotion,
The Spirit of Mankind, is gone,
All that remains
Is an empty shell,
A hollow man,
Judging others.

Poetry is Art! It's Life!
Does a painter shun colors, and only use black?
Poetry is Feeling! It's Pain!
Is a soldier at peace when he makes an attack?
Poetry is change! It's uncertain!
Does one make a choice, and never look back?

A Poem cannot be contained as one way,
In one single form it would not last a day,
Open your mind to what others will say,
You just might find that they're really okay.

I know that this is spamming, but I just have to say what an awesome job Aeria did. That poem was better than mine in my eyes. Keep up the good work!

"Hopeless Prediction"

There, I said it, showed you my love,
I watched you, waited for your reply.
You sat there, blushing, avoiding my eyes.
And I see now that I told you too soon.

I turned, ashamed, quickly I ran,
Into the night I went, tears flow.
You sat there, hesitant to follow.
After all, what else could be done?

My love for you is true, no doubt,
But I see that you are taken by another.
That love, that bond that runs between us,
I see it now as friends, not lovers.

I felt hopeful, decided to take a chance,
bet our friendship on misguided emotion.
It was a risk that I shouldn't have taken,
Now it seems that you just might forsake me.

I can only hope that this can be forgotten,
That it won't start our friendship's failure.
Now all that is left is for life to go on,
Just as long as you know that I love you.

(To the one for whom this poem is written, I love you, whether it be as friends, or something more.)

You sought to find yourself, you searched your very core
emptied all the memories just so you could explore
Did you find the answers hunted for? Did you find divine release?
Did the heavens open up to you? To you, did God once speak?
You shied away from happiness to wallow in your doubt
tossed away the love you felt, there was only one way out
I waited here, head in hands, anxiously wondering my fate
Could it be that I'm not good enough? Did my love hold no weight?
Bitter heart and bitter tongue, I tried to hold my breath
I thought upon the tendancies, but I left them all to rest
I'd ride through this trial, gaping hole within my heart
Just to hear the words at the end, the end of the start
But just as I felt all was through and we would be no more
You came back to me, and the love you once again swore
And though I hold the memories and I cannot be without
I know that this is what we need, of that I have no doubt
You thanked me for holding on, I thank you for the same
Perhaps we'll stay together, this time without the pain
This time we'll try our hardest, this time won't slip away
I love you with all my heart, and that's all I can say.

Note: This is a sonnet (fourteen lines in iambic pentameter), so excuse the Shakspear-esque language. Some of you free-form poets might not like its traditional style.

Upon a Bleak December

The frozen land with all its bulk doth sleep,
And through its cold bones blows the sighing wind.
Above the chill-ed 'scape the hea'ens do weep,
Below, cold creatures ponder season's end.

The sky of raven's cloak, so cold it seems
A crystal tunnel, mirr'ring dark-wrought light,
Within which lies a path to spectral dreams,
Whose frozen count'nence echoes winter's night.

And woven 'midst this shadowed tapestry,
Are'a thousand points of night chilled lanterns' glow,
Like ic-ed candles, set 'twixt frost-lit sky,
Their frozen flames 'cross glaz-ed contours flow.

But wi'in this ice-plagued tundra there doth loom
The threat of time-scorched knife, and winter's doom...

I'm not quite sure what inspired this. I guess meeting everyone on this forum had something to do with it. As always, no title.

Walking along the road, one girl pauses
What is the meaning of going on?
She has always walked this road before,
Never questioning the meaning of it all

Is it for the future that will be?
What is there that she cannot see?
And still why does she hesitate?
Is it doubts, feelings that don't abate?

Kicking a stone, she wanders on
Not going anywhere in particular
She continues walking down that road
Going somewhere, going nowhere

This path is beaten, deep ruts line
And it has been at the start of her time
Nothing changes, it stays the same
Laced with petty fears, small and tame

Then she comes across another path
One strewn with cherry blossoms
Enchanted, she takes the new route
Leaving her old self behind

The petals drift slowly around her
She looks eyes wide around her
And she listened, and she learned
Her ideas and dreams are turned

Never did she know what was real
The blossoms swirl past her now
Faster as the winds of change came.
Her hair in its flow, she stops and wonders

Her life, so empty long ago...
Following the same path it would go
How empty, devoid of true beauty
She herself claimed unblemished purity

Though now she's not sheltered
Herself not innocent, not anymore
But, then she came to learn again
The world is beautiful, for all its flaws...

No one is godlike, no one is ever perfect
What will be, no one can ever predict
And this girl, not completely understanding
Can now stand on her own feet, her scars mending

She continues to walk, eyes straight ahead
For every trial it is better to move on
If you look down instead, then you fall
Into the endless pit of self pity

The blossoms sway gently in the breeze
And her eyes open, she finally sees
How everyone can be wonderful
How everyone can be beautiful

This is for MC.

He comes, I greet him
I stopped at the look in his face
He gives me a sad smile and says
"I have to leave..."

Still smiling sadly, he turns away
I reached out and said "Wait!
What is the reason for this?"
My tears form as he tells all...

He looks at me, and then beyond
I turn to him, offering what I can...
And I ask that one final question
"When will you return to us?"

He smiles again, such a sad sight
"I...don't know. But I will return."
He then saw the tears
"Don't weep for me...I'm not worth it."

I hugged him, my sadness overflowing
"Don't say that...you are worth it.
You are my friend...how can I not cry?"
He hugs back and he sighs

Letting go, he turns to leave
I let him go, and watch him walk away
He looks back, one last thing
"Don't worry, I am strong."

He then leaves, I dry my tears
I smile at his last words
To lose what he did, and to say that...
He knows truly how to be strong.

Hate
Hate
Demon within, procreate

Love
Love
Mirroring the shattered dove

Row
Row
Row along the river pure

Sow
Sow
Throw away your seeds, all rotten

Something near,
Something far
Something closer and yet ever far
Something near,
Something far
Something hiding under fallen stones

Hide within
See within
Close your eyes and have dreams of stars
Soothing rain
Ebbing calm
Find your peace wherever stars are born

===

Errr... that was a LOT more lyrical than my other ones... >.> I adlibbed everything there in about two minutes or less. Including this end tag. :-P

I couldn't write my exam essay in my English class, so I wrote this poem instead. Kind of the rambling type.

I'm so tired
Let me sleep, let me dream
Blocking out this painful reality
Pitch black, softest hue
Settles about me, blanketing my mind
I don't want to think
To hear, to feel.
It's easier to be lonely
To walk the path of silence
I lock away my words
In a little box, the key is hung
No one will have access to my heart
And everything turns
Into shades of grey
Light, dark, it doesn't matter
They are just labels put on by people
I shun their company
I block out their words
I avert my eyes
I say nothing
I leave them in confusion
For I am not what they see
They wouldn't accept me
Would they even try?
Too frightened of being hurt
I brand them beneath me
And I move on.
But to where,
To where do I go?
It's all the same
Nothing felt, nothing learned
I'm walking in a dream.
And I, the dreaming dreamer
Continue living in the world I created
But, suddenly for the first time
The dreamer...has stopped dreaming
For her dream is gone...

I made two new poems today!

Here is poem number one:

One musical note.

Sounded by a unknown instrument
one single note is played
The sweetness of it
fills me with pleasure
as it reachs my ears
vibrating through the air
This one lonly note
touches the hearts of all it passes
going through time and space
towards eternity.

And here is poem number two:

The American Dream

They come from all over
this planet we call Earth
to dream the dream
the American Dream

They wish to come to this country
where the streets are paved with gold
and everyone can dream
the American Dream

It's a place where freedom is found
where children have a future
and dream the good dream
the American Dream

And as they look up at a tall lady
a lady whose name is Liberty
They smile and pray
for there familys future
and dream of things that are now possible
the American Dream.

So...did you like my two poems?
