"Yeah, really? You don't trust the book tha..." Jal started, with more than a bit of sarcasm before trailing off as though realizing something slowly, "Oh right. The rest of you don't read ancient. You see those carvings?"
The thief swept his hand over the walls, floors, and ceiling where the same set of glyphs were carved repeatedly, in odd patterns, side ways, vertically, different sizes, however the carver could fit the most of them on every surface of the ruin. "They're the same as the ones in the first two rooms. They say "Beware the Atrocity of Grace."" Jerking his thumb toward the book Jal continued, "Three guesses what the name of that book is."

"Gahhh!" Ralts grunted, this thing was heavy! There was no way that he could carry this book and read it at the same time, so he gently place it on the ground before him.
"I don't know if there's much we can do for the fellow," Ralts told Bello with a small tinge of mourning. "I don't truly hold a grudge against him for shooting me, he was doing his job, just like we were, and in that same vein, he knew the risks." Ralts told Bello. "Although.... the gambler did mention that his buyer was willing to remove a 50,000 gil debt if he gave him this book, he obviously wants this book and is willing to pay alot for it, so it may actually be worth our while to go to him and do just that. Prasad gets to go freely and put himself in a different debt, and we get paid, a win-win situation." He continued. "The only problems are that we don't know who he is in debt to, leading us no where to go, and that the scholar who was originally buying it has his servant guard waiting for us outside. The only information we have is the symbol on the Galkas jackets, bat wings and a canon." "But for right now, I'm going to see if there's anything specialk about this book, if there is, and we have to sell it to the scholar, then we mayu bargain for more." Ralts then bent down and looked at the heavy tome, and decided that he should examine it, as it may be rigged with traps like the rest of the dungeon. --- Awareness check on the book If Ralts reads the book, then a lore (history) check as to understand its contents |

Jal watched as Ralts took the book and laid it out on the floor. The thief couldn't help thinking he looked a little bit like a teenage girl laying in her bed reading some cheap fantasy novel and bit back a bit of a laugh at the resultant mental image--all the more vivid due to Ralts's androgyny.
After a second he let out a sigh and began pacing the room. He didn't like waiting, but he didn't like the idea of letting that book go without knowing what was in it, all things considered. The 50,000 gil or carvings on the walls alone would have been enough to cast doubts as to their job, but together? There was something more than easily meets the eye here. And reading it would take the mage time. Honestly, he'd have read the book himself--and been considerably less bored for it--but judging by the walls it was probably some sort of magical tome or cursed in some way. In either case the mage would have an easier time understanding it AND avoiding any kind of dark magics protecting it, and so he just began pacing the room until his eyes fell on Jade, a memory and concern surfacing that had been pushed back by all the recent action and discussions. A question he hadn't had time to ask. But, as he said while looking her over closely with a severe eye, "We've got time now." He moved his eyes to meet hers, a tangible air of suspicion about him, made only stronger by her race--he had escaped them once, after all. After a moment he continued, "Who are you, what are you doing here, and why shouldn't we leave you here rather than splitting the gil another direction?"

Ralts didn't notice anything special about the outside cover - but when he tried to open it he would find that the pages were stuck together. Focusing his magical senses, he figured out that it was a spell binding it shut - though he couldn't figure out how to release it.
...however, something did change after his attempt to read the contents. The title had begun to glow ever so slightly, a deep red that gave off an ominous feeling. And then, in letters that began to appear as if written by some invisible hand, a message underneath the title: "Is someone there?" |

Ralts tried his best to open the book, but to no avail, it was definitely magical,. Ralts was dissapointed until he saw the words on the cover change. "Incredible!" he muttered to himself.
"Take a look at this, the book is speaking!" Ralts said as he waved for the others to come look. This may be dangerous, he'd heard some bad storys about books that talk back, but it was worth the risk! Ralts had to know what this was, and if he couldn't read the book then he would speak to it. Changing his language to Ancient Ralts hesitantly responded, "Yes, can you please explain why you are capable of communicating." Ralts was feeling rather silly, but that was not going to get in the way of his of his learning pursuits! --- Inquiry check if necessary |

The previous message disappeared as Ralts asked his question. It wasn't long before a new one replaced it, longer than the one it had been before.
"Yes. I can tell you. But you will have to pay a price." |

"I don't feel quite comfortable about paying a price to a talking book," Ralts said aloud in common.
This could be very unsafe. Talking items that request a price almost always have ill-intents towards the person paying this price. The mage pondered for a while. "Hey," he said to the others, "there's a possibility I'm about to sell my soul or something in that respect, so be ready to get the out if I catch on fire or anything." He then converted back to ancient and nervously said, "ok mysterious book, what is this price of yours that I have to pay?" |

"Pledge your life to me," the book said.
"Place your hand on me, and repeat these words: 'I offer my life to Lord Ciaran, Emperor of N'Revat.' "With that your question, and any other you seek to ask, shall be answered." |

"Give me time to talk this over with my cohorts," the mage said as he lifted a finger as a sign to tell it to wait.
He then turned to the party, "yup the book wants my soul, its apparently inhabited by the spirit of an emperor, Emperor of N'Revat, and it claims that it will give me the information I seek if I pledge my life to it, obviously, I am apprehensive, so is anyone else willing to do it?" Then Ralts began to wonder, who was this emperor, why was he in a book. --- Lore (history) roll to learn of the emperors identity. |

"We've got time now." Jal said, looking at Jade with a severe eye. "Who are you, what are you doing here, and why shouldn't we leave you here rather than splitting the gil another direction?"
"Jade Degaur, I was sent to help you out and because of my charming personality." Jade grinned back. "Didn't the Guild tell you?" She frowned, thinking about the information on bewaring atrocities and demands of allegiance. "Looks like there's a lot they didn't tell us. Typical." "Don't be stupid!" she snapped at Ralts when he asked if anyone wanted to try the oath. "Weasel some more information out of it about this Emperor." Jade ordered.
