They've been calling it "The Republican Party" for decades.

Here's a depressingly relevant video, too. I needed to watch this a decade or so ago.

It must suck to be a bigot lately. Their greatest weapon against transgendered people, the bathroom bill, is going up in flames. I remember speaking with Terex about that at length and how it was so effective, and now those bathroom bills have national attention and scrutiny and criticism and people are realizing how very little it actually matters.
Trans rights are coming along exponentially faster than gay rights did, which were faster than minority rights...it's good to see that, despite incredible pressure and fear and discrimination, opposition and threats and hatred, progress is still finding a way to win out in America.

I wouldn't go so far.
The Republican nominee for the Presidency of the United States is the most unrepentant, overt bigot we've seen in some time. Even George W. Bush, as disgustingly awful as he was in office, had better tact and at least a modicum of compassion.

And yet I am still reasonably happy about it, the Republican party allowed this to slowly manifest as they presented anti-establishment concepts as part of how they decide to run. This was the inevitable extreme as payment for these habits, and it may force a restructuring for the party internally over the next two to four years. Which the Good Ol Party is long since overdue for.

Don't hold your breath. The people in the party opposed to Trump are still bigoted racists with little concept of humanity beyond their own personal existence that AGREE with his policies, any restructuring will just be lip service.

I think the only hope for actual substantial change in either party is to have third parties with clout, like how in Canada we have our dems/republicans but then also the NDP (actual liberals), blocs (special interest), and the green party (actually not sure if they have any seats, I haven't kept up.) Because if one of the major parties fucks up then the votes get split and they lose their power and have to stay accountable. (Of course, Canada also has issiues with the vote not being properly representative, mind.)
How do we get third parties in though? It seems impossible. Last edited by pochercoaster; 05-05-2016 at 04:51 PM. |

Well this year isn't a bad start. Bernie Sanders is running as a Dem, but he is politically independent and has been for a long while now, and depending on if the Republican party decides to have its own personal apocalypse it is because an outsider intruded on the Republican primary and won.
We create disparity, and that can create changes.
