BBBFF was just horribly blaaah and the transition into it was extremely awkward.
Meanwhile This Day managed to alternate between sounding sinister and desperate, and was pretty great on the whole. Quote:

This Day had no emotion at all put into it! It was very bland.

No emotion? What song were you listening to?
I could understand if you thought it was generic, or out-of-place, or whatever, but a lack of emotion is the last complaint I would have thought would be aimed at it. It being highly emotional is the main reason I like it so much. I mean, I can respect your opinion on the songs, but to be perfectly honest, I'm just baffled.

It all sounded very much flat-toned. While there may have been a level of emotion from both of the characters, it didn't shine through because the entire song was sort of on one flat plane. It doesn't have any sort of variance to catch your attention, which I can't get into. It's very much just straight up, here's a slab, look at it, rather than enveloping you into what it's doing.
Maybe lack of emotion was the wrong phrase, but it doesn't draw you in, it just sits you down in front of it, at an arm's length away.

Well, on EqD, there's a poll about the best song of the season going on...
This Day Aria and Smile Smile Smile are leading the pack by a LARGE margin

am I the only one who thought the Mane cast didn't have too much to do with this finale? Like... the only one who really needed to be there was twilight, and even she didn't do that much. Just felt like more could have been done with it

Twilight was relevant in the first half. It was her brother's wedding and she was the only one who noticed something wrong with the bride. In the second half she was captured by the big bad and aided the real Cadance's escape. But then the plot was resolved by the side characters without any influence from Twilight so a lot of that got diminished. Though the other five main ponies did nothing through the episodes besides fail to get the elements.

I'm actually pretty okay with someone other than the main characters being able to do something once in a while.
