I don't know if its trying to do something different, as much as moving out of the limitations imposed by doing sprite comics. I think the general consensus is 8bit is the best sprite comic out there, but the limitations with merchandising and such are too much for him to keep doing forever.

8-bit's end has been near. What it's really a sign of is that the new site design with multiple simultaneous comics archives is near.
