Light houses are supposed to be lit all the time. It's up to the keeper to make sure of this so that boats don't crash into the rocks.

I dont live near a sea so I just assumed that they'd be smart and somehow figure out how to make unmanned lighthouses work so that people wouldn't have to work one really boring job. And then I assumed that the Lighthouse AI would run rampant and cause boats to crash! Thats how i got to what I was thinking. I live near mountains so no worry about them becoming sentient robots yet.

GPS and radar has pretty much killed the lighthouse keeper as a viable career.

I live in Wisconsin, which is bordered on three sides by water. XD (The Mississippi River, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan, for reference.) We have lighthouses in the state, and while some of them are "automated," they still need regular maintenance in case the bulb burns out, even if nobody is actually living there. From what I understand, any AI they have is about as advanced as that of an automatic night light.


Edit: Ness, that's not actually true. Lighthouses are still an important maritime staple, especially when major trade routes are involved. After all, while we have GPS and such, it's still an important visual cue to a captain of a ship. Until boats start piloting themselves, lighthouses will still be needed.

Well you should go to the tech tree and research "Advanced Naval Systems" it improves the range of all your maritime units and allows you to move an extra square per tic.
