She didn't lose her gloves, I just didn't fill them in with black because they were in front of her black wings and therefore couldn't be seen had I done so. If you notice how sometimes I make her wings white? (Look at Panel 2 and Panel 3 on Page 100). It's the same principle. I sometimes don't like leaving a "white outline" around black shapes over black shapes for separation purposes and so will just leave them white.
It's nothing too radical, Jeff Smith does it a lot in his comic "Bone" for instance.

Ahh makes sense. I am no artist, but out of curiosity, would using a white borderline also work? I have wondered how to best show a black object on a black background.

Yeah, a white outline will work. I do that every so often myself, but sometimes I think it doesn't look right, so I will do it this way instead
I suppose it's just a matter of preference, though changing something that is black to white can sometimes lead to some confusion since it's not visually consistent (like in this instance). It seems that I see the white outline a lot more than I see things changed from black to white, so maybe that's the ideal method.

I don't think the gloves are missing, they're just drawn black in panel 3 and white in 4. Since the art is (mostly) black and white, some things presumably of an intermediate shade get drawn white against black backgrounds and vice versa. Erin's wings, for instance; they're black in 101 but white in 100. Her gloves have been handled that way before too, for instance in 86.

Page 102!
Finally some magic action! Awhile back on Twitter, I asked everyone if they preferred "fire" or "ice" magic, well...page 103 shall reveal the winner! (Twitter didn't really determine the magic I chose, I had already made up my mind, but I asked everyone anyway just to hear their thoughts on it. It worked out conveniently because more people chose the one I chose) (also we're just doing two pages this week. There will be a special week where I post 3-4 pages coming up at the end of this chapter )

I prefer throat-exploding explody magic! But I guess I'm getting that either way!

It was a tough decision between fire and ice. Up until I got to page 102, I had my mind made up about it. Then, as I was laying out page 102, I thought the other might work better, so I had do some last minute adjustments.
But, I think the change was for the best

And it was already awesome.
Well.
This comic just got about 100% more awesome. Also: RAY OF FROST! I agree with your appraisal. Ice magic is the best magic. Last edited by TDK; 02-28-2012 at 02:48 PM. |
