thats the thing though, why even think about these matters in black or white?
there is no difference, and its not "our" "your" or "their" fault that anyone is anywhere. Anyone involved in the act of kidnapping people and transporting them over seas to be sold as property is dead now, as are any of the people who were victimized. Whatever social stigma was attached to those people is irrelevant now. The only reason racism still exists is because it is allowed to, even as idle thought on the inherent "differences" between people with genetic variations from our own. The point is, there is no inherent difference. we are all the same. There is a variety of appearance, but on an intellectual level (the only one that matters in an ideal society) there is no variation in potential. So just put it like it is, those guys are assholes. Assholes shouldn't be tolerated. Quote:
That's still thinking in an us vs. them perspective. "We" is everyone! Quote:

I can throw my support behind both Wizard and Funka's last post, though I do have to disagree on inherent differences. There is not a lot of evidence for it, but enough for someone who wants to be racist to claim there is. And that's just the problem, regardless of genetics, if someone wants to be racist, they'll be racist. Another very important point for me is that even if there were inherent differences in, say, reasoning between races, what that means is reasoning isn't a proper bar to set moral considerability at. This is a fairly common against racism, among other things, because the bar is set at some arbitrary level for the purposes of discrimination.
If I have to be outraged at anything, it's the "whites can't be racist, but anybody else can because whites are bad" thing. Sadly, this is what I've observed personally, and this discussion serves to back up what I've experienced myself. Now, I suppose if you trace back my white-ass family tree for long enough, I'm sure a Roman soldier may have discriminated some people, but I fail to see how this gives non-whites an all-access pass to branding me innately as a neo-nazi bastard that would throw them all in a concentration camp if I was given the chance. Well, that's stereotyping I guess. I don't base my actions on what happened hundreds of years ago now, not to be confused with learning from past mistakes, I just don't see a trip to Africa and subsequent return with a band of slaves overly likely at the moment. Personally, I would have gone to the administration over what happened to you. I'm somewhat surprised, for someone who won a morality award, you haven't already reported a moral injustice. Sure, they might make your reporting harder by lying, but how is that worse than choosing to do nothing and taking it? How does that serve to root out the problem? |

Yeah, i think that these people are assholes but i would have just ignored them. i mean if they want to try to play the racist thing, that's theyre problem, but you shouldnt worry about it. and yes racism is only here because we allow it, i agree on that.

Also, I agree with what I think Azisien said, and I also want to include that I find it odd that other cultures get a free reign to be racist to us, and not us to them. And now, some rude comments to our sponser... Quote:

'Alerting an administrator' won't actually solve anything but satisfy a petty revenge impulse and cause bad blood.

I would suggest that you talk to them personally, just go up and say, 'hey I think there was a mistunderstanding'. If they still get on your case then just ignore it, in the end you were the bigger person who wanted was willing to talk about it. Neither side should assume and the only real solution to the problem at hand is dialogue. In regards to all the other comments about racism and double standards; I don't know how to react. I always thought that the one problem with racist double standards is that it only seemed to apply to black and white people. I think it is just as racist for a white person to call a black person the n word as it is for a black person to call an asian person a 'slant' or 'chink'. Just be careful and don't put salt on the wound.

People who are dicks aren't any more free to use racist comments than you are, under any circumstances, ever. It sounds to me either he was playing the "You Hate Me, You're White, I'm Black, You're Racist" card, or he felt like fucking with a slave-beating whiteboy. Either he's racist or a jackass, and either way, you don't need do do anything about him. He's going to continue being that way. All you can do is make sure your kids don't end out that way too.
I don't see how, under any circumstances, it should be 'okay,' for someone to do that. But also realize that the aforementioned 'petty revenge' scenario with reporting to an admin doesn't help the situation; bad blood leads to bad blood.

I guess that makes sense. Because, when someone walks up to you in the street and punches you in the face, alerting the police would only serve to satisfy a petty revenge impulse and cause bad blood...Riiiiight...

Just adding an old story in here because I think it holds relevance. My dad, who is white, punched a black man who was breaking into his van. The police did little to help the situation when the man said he was punched because 'he was black'. Not because he was illegally breaking into a van that wasn't his and stealing tools that weren't his.
I had a similar situation at work with a woman stealing toothbrushes. It wasn't the fact that she had toothbrushes stashed in her bag. It was the fact a white girl (me) approached her and asked her to give back the goods when she pulled the 'it's because I'm black' card. I realise, also, this works every which way possible. But these are two stories which have happened in my life that I feel relevant.
