I thought I could find some neat deals on laptops that weren't too much more than my estimates for a hard drive, more RAM, and a new video card, but all of the ones I am finding have integrated graphics instead of a dedicated card. So if you don't go the desktop route you are certainly correct.

I'd still recommend going with an external drive. Less tinkering inside the laptop, and they are pretty cheap for a lot of storage. I know I keep all my games (TF2, KotOR, HL, HL2 and the episodes, and some SNES roms), Pictures, movies, and Ebooks on a 1 terrabit external, and only keep essentials on my internal 219 gig HD
