I'll be honest and say I was kind of half into this before but people disappearing is quite the spin.

I'd also be worried for B_Real, mostly his safety. Safety aside, why Smarty's gone and B's still here and not the other way around.

And how many of these shadow types there are, because we really don't know.

Indeed. In the book, there were countless numbers of them, and I think it was implied that every sentient being that died became one of them. If that's how this is working, then we're fucked from the start, so let's assume otherwise. I'd say they probably act as a secondary mafia, so in a game of this size about three members is standard.

I assume if everyone who's dead is one of them, as TAL is suggesting from his memory of the book (I gave up on like chapter 18), there's no way in hell (ha, a funny) we can combat it.

So let's just let this day do what needs doing. Which is eliminating scum first and foremost. And conveniently I'm the only scum around. Though I'm not to sure if we even want to kill someone at all because of it, but if I'm the last one standing, I still win, so I think we'd want me dead, eh?

If they're three members, this is still going to suck, but at least it's manageable. If it's the former, then short of drugging everyone in town we're pretty much screwed.
What we really need right now is for B_Real to come back with his analysis. Hopefully giving us something to go off of.

Yep. As much as I'm enjoying our speculation here, we can't do much without concrete evidence. That said, unless this is a gimmick game with a predetermined ending, I'd assume the dead aren't turning into them.
