What is the benefit to doing the Ancient Cave? Do you get the ultimate equipment? Bragging rights?

There's treasures you can find that give you money, you get a shit ton of experience, and you get equipment that you can take out (or bring back down with you) that is of pretty good quality, depending on the level.
Think of it as your one stop shop for grinding equipment and levels. It's hard as shit, though, 'cause unless you find a spell in a blue chest in there, you can't even take your magic in with you.

FRONT KICK OF DOOM!

Just want to emphasize...
You start at level one. No spells, no magic, no armor, No girlfriend, nothing. If you find it in a blue chest, it's great to have when you go back. If you want to take on the last level, prepare to plan for a FULL day of trying to get to the last level. |

If I can beat FFXII's Yiazmat in one sitting, I can probably handle the Ancient Cave. Probably.

Nope.
It's like a bajillion levels, and you start at level 1 with no magic, and it scales faster than the actual game. I'm pretty sure you can't even grind, 'cause monsters don't respawn for you. You're going to need to try a few times, collecting reliable equipment, and even then you'll need to get lucky enough to find a few healing spells. Healing spells are a necessity. Seriously, it's damn near impossible.

Which you don't get to keep when leaving the cave, so yeah.
you start at Level one in the cave, and when you leave it's reset to what it was before. The cave is more or less the part of the game for those who can't get enough of it after playing through the main story. If you beat the game on New Game+ you can even start an Ancient Cave only game and choose even characters you usually couldn't take into the Cave to accompany you. I beat it once. On a emulator. but I've tried several times to beat it with my regular SNES version. It has 99 Levels of randomly generated content. If you're out of luck you won't even find a blue chest in one run, or the item in it won't be of any use. And since the enemies don't respawn you should beat every enemy on every level of the goddamn dungeon just to be on the safe side. And even then that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be strong enough for the later levels. So I suggest you save the cave until you've finished the main game. But Gades' Sword is definitely nice to have for that Dungeon, because it makes the first levels a breeze.

Chapter Five: Fire dungeon is a bunch of bullshit.
Part Twenty-Four Part Twenty-Five Part Twenty-Six Part Twenty-Seven Summary: Went to the next town, didn't buy anything made out of glass, and told some rich guy I'd go to the North Cave and find him a ruby. Forgot to swap my rows this time around. Once in the dungeon, I found myself some new equipment and a Pokemon named Toast. (You guys should rename him.) Couldn't find the motherfucking key to move on though. Help a guy out!

At 0:17 on the last video, you can see a switch. Hit it with an arrow. You should be able to figure out the rest :P
And I said it on one of your videos, but... BLAZE/Toast should be Entei. Because he's one of the few capsule monsters that can easily reach it's higher forms in the game (Most others you get too late), and he's the fire elemental dog. Easily my favorite, though his low GUT stat makes him run away often. |

I catched up with the LP now and think it's quite entertaining. Mostly due to nostalgia maybe, or not. I don't know and/or care about/for the reason/s.

But since I already tried to record a Let's Play myself I know how you tend to miss details like this while coming up with shit to say while walking past that crucial detail at least ten times. I've done that too with a much simpler game (The Guardian Legend).
