.... Davies did Midnight? WHAT THE FUCK? He couldn't write like that more often? That episode ruled. One of my favourites up there with Blink.

Man he should have wrote the Doctor in a story where he's alone and loses more often, when he doesn't try to shoehorn romance or make Deus ex Machina so he can win he's pretty good.

Then again the Doctor losing is kinda against the idea of the show so I suppose he couldn't do that too often.

You thought the series four finale was good?

Seriously? The one with fanfic human Doctor and Time Lord Donna and everyone piloting the TARDIS and stupid-arse pointless memory erasure?

Dunno if Rose is that much of a step up. I mean, in "Parting of the Ways", f'rinstance, any good things she does aren't actually things she does with her own skills or strength, but with the Magic Plot-Resolving Beams granted her by the creamy magic center of the TARDIS. (She even stumbled upon it by accidentally hitting the console, didn't she?) It seemed to me, at least, like she never actually did a whole lot, but the characters and writing still tried to insist that "no, Rose is totally awesome and rad and does a bunch of awesome stuff!"

I wasn't all that impressed with Rose, compared to some of the classic series' assistants. Really, for all the flack classic Who gets for weepy, useless women, there was a stretch there around the 1970s where pretty much all the female protagonists were surprisingly capable--I'd say from around Liz Shaw to the Romanas, at least, maybe more. (Hell, Sarah-Jane was a feminist! And not even a hateful, vicious caricature of a feminist, either!)

Also: Tera, you read Lawrence Miles' blog too? Awesome =DDDDDDDD .

That's the one. Although you're over-emphasizing the bad bits, and I thought the mindwipe was one of the strongest parts of the episode.

Also human Doctor did two things that fully redeem him as far as I'm concerned: First of all, his apparent disgust with the idea of being part human was a nice little jab at the movie. Secondly, he kept Rose from coming back into the series - at least for the moment.

No, she purposely went looking for it. Regardless, I pretty much agree with you, only I still think she's a point ahead of many of the classic girl-companions in terms of actually having some character.

As far as I'm concerned the Series 4 finale was an awful awful fanfic and never happened. Gah.

Eh, there's some cringe-worthy bits, but I enjoyed it. The bits I didn't like were mostly when they were at The Shadow Proclamation. Also everything with Rose, but that's just a given.

I did like Davros calling the Doctor out on how he uses people. 'Cause that's been a part of him for a long time. One of the things I really liked about Ace was that SHE called him on that, and got genuinely pissed off over it to the point that they had an entire serial pretty much dealing with it.

It was unnecessary. Sure, Catherine Tate had contractual obligations and all, but the whole thing felt forced and unnatural. The character did not have any legitimate reason to be abandoned, and it was obvious the issue was scripted because the producers needed a tearjerker like in every single finale. It wouldn't be drama without some ANGST!

Of course this wouldn't have been a problem to begin with had RTD gone with something more substantial than "Donna becomes GOD", but still.

I'm not really too concerned with that.

Yeah, but they've actually done a pretty good job with their tear-jerkers... at least in season 3 and 4. Season 1 didn't really have much of one, unless you count regeneration (and I don't, as that's an established aspect of the character) and season 2... well, I've already said how I feel about Rose.

Honestly, I think the Donna thing was the most legitimate one of the three. Kinda highlights one of the tenth's big flaws too.

I've not seen much past the modern episodes myself. and there's only one I don't like (Midnight's TOO DAMNED BORING and provides next to nothing to the overall plot!)

last 2 episodes iwth the Daleks so far? EPIIIIIC. (and what a cliffhanger, too!)
