I thought it was a great Giant Monsters Rampage movie (from the design of the monsters, the obvious but not overplayed allegorical message, the no-kissing, etc.) but a pretty mediocre Giant Mecha movie.
Also, I am now positive that in a secluded attic somewhere a portrait of Charlie Hunnam is slowly getting better at using an American accent.

The dumbest thing in the whole movie, aside from the movie's premise itself and the human response of building giant robots (which I will suspend because Power Rangers), was the damn sword. That thing is so effective, why didn't they open with it? In fact, why aren't all the Jaegars made of razor-edged blades?

they really used the "Super Sword Upgrade" trope?
that's even more awesome on my book... now all we need for the sequel is a Jaeger with a giant Drill hand. |

Super Chain Sword
Thinking back on that, yeah, it was just a straight up Megazord "Get sword, fuck up monsters" deal

A lot of the plot doesn't make sense when you look more closely at it. Like, why would the worlds governments stop funding the only tried and tested response to giant monster invasions and instead start funding the untried and obviously inneffective giant wall project instead?
I know they claimed that they were losing mechas left and right due to the kaiju getting stronger, but units like Striker Eureka was the best killer they had and was clearly still a match for anything, and it was the first and only MK V jeager, so why didn't they just build more MK Vs? Hell even the MK III Gypsy Danger could take down class 4 Kaiju pretty easily, so clearly the problem wasn't with the tech, they just needed better pilots, or more of them. The wall project was really pretty stupid to begin with. How did they ever expect that to be able to consistantly repel anything, when these creatures had already shown themselves capable of bringing down entire cities.

The folks pulling the strings evidently decided the world was already doomed and wanted to buy time for their all-night coke orgies in Denver by walling the huddled masses up on the beach. After the current state of the Republican party, I could buy it.

But really, the entire logic of the mecha part is built on a non-existent foundation, even before you get to the wall. I mean, if you know conventional weapons work, why wouldn't you devote all of the world's money into a bunch of giga-cruisers parked right next to the rift you can easily monitor at all times with a bajillion rail guns pointed at the choke point? Or hell, just put like 20 nukes at the mouth of the tunnel and set up a proximity trigger, then replace that every few months. Oh, right, because then we wouldn't have a movie.

Yes of course, as I said (somewhat vaguely), you have to either consciously or unconsciously accept the fact that for Pacific Rim to exist, you must be dealing in an alternate history where humans have the resources we have today, but completely lack any semblance of strategic thought.
If you accept that, and you have to, both the Jaegar project and the Wall project begins to make sense. Hell, even holding back the sword makes a decent amount of sense. Err, anti-sense. edit: shit, even the alien invaders have to lack sense if they invest these kinds of resources into an invasion (seriously, consider the scope of their biotech facility adjacent to the wormhole, it makes even a kaiju look like an ant), and all they do is open one forty-meter hole in one spot. I'd open eight thousand, all in different places, all with different kaiju. Standard wormhole warfare doctrine, man. Earth over. Last edited by Azisien; 07-15-2013 at 07:32 PM. |

When mobile suit gundam tells me that the entire reason why close combat with giant human piloted mechs is the new norm of war because of a new super particle discovered that nulifies the chance of long range, controlled, warfare... i'm ok with that.
I never expected Pacific Rim to give me anything more than a huge live action 2 hours long Anime. From EVERYTHING i've seen so far, it delivers in that regard in spades. Including all the flaws you expect from that medium. This is a crafted piece of work it seems. So, i'm Guilhermo Del Totally Okay With This... |

Either that or time moves much faster on the other side of the rift and they're just sending stuff through at a pretty reasonable pace from their point of view, though they somehow still had radio contact after Gypsy went through with no time dilation so that seems unlikely. As for only making one wormhole, well, maybe they can only make one? Maybe trying to open multiple causes dimensions to collapse or something. It's alien tech, who knows how it works?
