....those don't look particularly similar. The facial structure is somewhat so, but that's being added to by the not-so-clever transition. Other than the actual structure, the look, feel, and expression are completely different.

Okay, what? How do you jump from "similar facial structure" (not similar faces, mind) to insulting the guy's entire style?

Nomura has made some really sweet monster and character designs over the years. He's actually a pretty damn good artist. It's fine if he's not to your taste, but have some tact about it. It's not like he'd be the first artist to ever reuse a face, and the only one you've shown that I'd actually call reused would be Lightning/Cloud.

Edit: Not to mention that things being reused probably has less to do with Nomura's artistic ability, and more to do with Square exploiting the shit out of its FF license to basically make the same game over and over again.

Edit: Did Nomura even DO the 3D models?

The jawline lines up almost perfectly. The lips are almost the same, except that they bring her corners up into a smile while lightening them. I'm not seeing the distinction in the eyes ('cept for the irises) or nose though. The only big difference in that area are Stella's eyebrows, set a little higher up than his, pulling her eyes up a bit. Looking at that gif 4-5 times, it becomes obvious that both characters have differences. The problem is that they're so minute compared to each other (save for the girls neck, which seems to be 50% longer for some reason), which is why you get such a ridiculously smooth transition between the two.

The girl's eyes are more widely open and her eyebrows give a less irate air. Her nose is about a centimetre thinner (maybe half? could just be the lightning), and her cheek has a slight indent compared to his.

Hairstyle, skintones, setting and clothes will obviously make sure no one ever mistakens one for the other, but from a design standpoint, it does seem like they've used the same template for both their faces. It's the same technique Tim Buckley utilises for his comic.

Let's check my post again. I said "Tetsuya Nomura is a shitty artist and so is his art". The apparent stupidity of the sentence has a purpose, which is not just to seem comical by virtue of redundancy. I frankly believe Tetsuya Nomura embodies all that's been wrong with Square this decade: an overuse of marketable formulas by trying on the proven, style over subtance, and too much "snazz".

As a director, he's pure shit. He has some excellent ideas every once in a while (Chain of Memories, The World Ends With You) which excel solely because of the gameplay mechanics, but his directorial and writing skills lack any sort of depth (Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts II come to mind).

I'll be clear; I do not hate his art style. His FFVII original designs are masterful in simplicity, his Dissidia drawings emanate elegance with attitude, and VersusXIII has a more interesting setting and art direction than its main counterpart. Nomura has talent, but I believe he misuses it. His Kingdom Hearts designs are absolute rubbish, cramming J-Pop garbage into iconic characters that end up looking completely mismatched. Had he gone for something more subtle (as in, why the fuck does Donal Duck have a zipper on his hat?), yet still imaginative (I point towards Akihiko Yoshida's FFXII sketches), my opinion of him would be more validating.

For example: FFX, with its Asian inspired locales, had no place whatsoever for Lulu and her French-maid gothic appearance. On the other hand, I have to give him credit for The World Ends With You concept and promotional art. While still "J-Poppy" and "trendy", it fits with the setting of the game perfectly.

Overexposition of a flaw, regardless of whether it is imposed by a higher power or not, is still a flaw.

Of course not, but we are at a point where rendering technology can faithfully render an artist's design almost perfectly. I can wholeheartedly blame Nomura here.
