Put me in for a mafia game. Just 10-12 players.

That's racist. I don't know what it's racist against, but it just is.

I hold a firm anti-rainbow viewpoint. Those smug light bands hanging in the air, thinking they're so special. God forbid if two of them get together because then they just become absolute show-offs.

That's too bad, I wanted to run a specific Mafia of my own. Either Movie Monsters Mafia or possibly Frankenstein Mafia. Guess I'll wait my turn though. Gives me time to think of the stuff for it while I review the rules.

Okay, proposal. Could there be a rule that obligates people running a mafia game to tell their players when they're using a really unusual, untried setup? Because mafia isn't always guaranteed to be fun, and, in my recent experience, the really experimental stuff often ends in unsatisfying games through overcomplication and drastic changes to the game's mechanic.

I don't even want this to be super-strict, stuff like the MLP mafia is still something I consider mostly normal, but when you've got stuff like 3-faction role madness, or free-for-alls, it should be mandatory to at least drop a hint that you're doing something really nonstandard.

Because then people like me (that is to say, BORING OLD SQUARES) can go to some other forum for their vanilla-mafia fix and have some fun there, rather than getting frustrated at shitty game mechanics that I didn't know anything about before I joined.

I understand what you mean, Gem. My idea is pretty standard, the only big thing about it is the theme. I was thinking of an 'off-mechanic', but it probably wouldn't work out too well. I do have one particular non-standard goal in mind, but I'm still working out the ideas in my head to logic out how it'd work. I'm looking to not only make it fun for everyone else, but also for myself. It's in my opinion that a good mafia game is not only enjoyed by the players, but also the GO.

Since it's on topic, I think games should list all the roles at sign up. Maybe you can leave out non-essential, flavorish roles like lyncher. The game shouldn't come down to trying to figure out what a role does, or if some faction has X role or not.

And that's cool. You're telling us it's a bit off-mechanic, but should, otherwise, turn out normal. I'll probably join that, but people who want pure vanilla will know not to. That's cool.

And sure, the GM should have fun as well, otherwise it's shitty. But so should the players.

Edit:

Well, I dunno. Like, I don't think there need to be rules about what can be in games and what not. Because everyone has a different perception of what is fun, and the rules shouldn't cater to any specific taste.

BUT

Players should be informed in general terms about the kind of game that awaits them, so they can actually decide if it suits them. If it does, yay, they join. If it doesn't, there's other places to play mafia on the internet, and when the game is done, the people that did participate will hopefulyl have gotten what they came for.

And if a certain type of game doesn't get many players, they it won't be run much, or at all.
