This is a good bunch of replies. Almost too good...
I kid. I gots me a list here: 1) Terry Pratchett (Meister) - It was a close-run thing between Pterry and DNA (and one-half of Grant Naylor), but in the end...the awesomemess of the Dirk Gently novels and Last Chance to See only almost make up for Mostly Harmless, whereas Night Watch is, well, unadulterated awesome (and Thud! is much better on second reading). 2) Douglas Adams (fifthfiend) - Well? Come on, Mostly Harmless. 3) Doug Naylor (Squishy Cheeks) - Better answer would've been "Grant Naylor" =P : apart, the two are decent writers, but together they were amazing. But hey, the end of Last Human brings a tear to my eye... 4) Phillip Pullman (Preturbed) - How the hell did you get such a good look at my bookshelf? I saved up specially for each book in the His Dark Materials trilogy. Well, it's good . 5) Dr. Seuss (Red Fighter 1073) - This author is what I filled my head with when I was just a lil' bookworm--and even now I still dip into it every so often as a big bookworm. 6) J.R.R. Tolkien (secretskull) - Some of the first big-person books I ever read were The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy; I can't remember how young I was when I tried except that the person ringing up the box set asked if I wasn't a bit young to tackle these books, and that I skipped most of the big paragraphs (shame on me, I know). I've since learned better. Thanks to the rest of you for inadvertently providing me with a list of new Authors to Try (or Retry Harder; I didn't get into Gaiman's American Gods until very soon before I had to return it to the library, to my considerable chagrin). On with the next round!
