Heh. Wouldn't it be pretty interesting if that turns out to be how Soul Reapers first happened? I mean, look at how Ichigo developed his own powers. It may very well be a very accelerated version of how a person becomes a Soul Reaper in their first incarnation. Which as we all know is the way Ichigo does everything.

I believe they already do it, just keep some of the mask as, Iunno, a memento.

I suspect that true Vizards in total command of their abilities can go all the way back to how they looked in the pendulum arc. That is more like a released arrancar and slightly less like just a shinigami with a mask. Ichigo's latest transformation would suggest that as well. However, his lineage is unique and he obtained his shinigami and his hallow powers in different ways than any of the Vizards. In short, all bets are off and you really never know for sure with Bleach.

Two sources of power for a hollow: Their mask, and their hole.

If they completely remove their mask then they're still just arrancars, ala the holes. If they somehow did both, I'd wager it'd be similar to a vaizard who puts on a mask and has a hollow hole, ala Ichigo. So a super arrancar.

About Hollow masks... they can't really remove all their mask. But the more powerfull Arrancar have a very human-like figure.

Also, on my theory with no need on Spoilers (because it's based on "Methinks") is that an Arrancar can indeed become something else, but not due to their masks, but actually their "Holes". If that got closed, something could happen.

Case in point: Where is Neliel's Hollow Hole? Barragan's? Hallibel's?

Remember 100 years ago the vizards were captain level, and have trained those powers for awhile. We saw Shinji pull off a cero even. I'm betting they can access shikai and bankai normally, and just dont have need to since their mask has been enough.

There's a trend among the arrancar to be somewhat anxious about their hollow-holes. Many Arrancar hide their holes under clothing, and crazy cat arrancar pointed out that Ulquiorra tends to poke holes in people in the same place as his hole.

And of course, a hidden hole is an opportunity for your enemy to whiff a stab (cf. Nnoitora)

So I was watching some old episodes and it occurred to me that what sums up what I like about Rukia as a character is that when she flips the fuck out and punches the hero in the face, the hero pretty much always has it coming and in the end is basically better off for having taken a good solid facekick or two.

Oh also taking a moment to talk about the anime here in this Animation Forum thread, I liked the way it expanded on Ex-Captain Surferdude's character in those Pendulum episodes. That one episode of him farting around town drinking and gambling but then it turns out he was actually tracking down some dudes to then go and brutally murder really expanded on his character re: the being a totally ruthless bastard that someone (Krylo?) mentioned in a previous thread.
