Well... i don't know if that would be the proper word. I don't know much of the character really, just didn't get a positive vibe out of her after reading the comcis summary and her list of Exes

Quote:
Ramona's Evil Exes

  • Matthew Patel is Ramona's first evil ex-boyfriend. He is Indian and has mystical powers and can summon "Demon Hipster Girls" at will. Scott gets $2.10 for defeating him.
  • Todd Ingram is Ramona's third evil ex-boyfriend. He is a bass player for The Clash At Demonhead. He has special "vegan-based" psychic powers (although he is secretly consuming non-vegan foods). Personality-wise, he is incredibly arrogant, narcissistic, and uncaring, as well as a liar. He dates Envy, his childhood love, but cheats on her repeatedly with Lynette, the band's drummer, as well as with other girls. Scott gets some money (again in coins) plus an extra life when he defeats him.
  • Roxanne "Roxie" Richter is Ramona's fourth evil ex, an ex-girlfriend, and her former college roommate. She is a "half-ninja" and an accomplished fine artist, who taught Ramona much of what she knows in terms of her ninja abilities and subspace. Roxie has an inferiority complex over her "half-ninja" background, as well as her figure. She claims Scott is a "pussy" who refuses to fight his own battles, prompting Scott to finally mature in his relationship with Ramona, gaining a sword and "The Power of Love". When defeated by Scott, she explodes into a cascade of woodland creatures, a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Kyle & Ken Katayanagi are Ramona's fifth and sixth evil ex-boyfriends, a pair of Japanese twins who often finish each other's sentences. The pair are 'expert roboticists' who summon robots to fight Scott. They vowed to work together closely once the pair realized Ramona had been cheating on them with each other. The twins capture Kim Pine to lure Scott to them, pointing out in the meantime that Kim may still be in love with Scott. Scott defeats them and gets $79.95 for Ken, $74.95 for Kyle, and a $2 twins bonus (again all in coins) after defeating them. He also unlocks an achievement for defeating them simultaneously.
  • Gideon Gordon Graves is the leader of the League of Ramona's Evil Ex-Boyfriends and suggested to be Ramona's boyfriend previous to Scott, in New York City. He is mentioned several times throughout the series, but never seen fully until the end of Volume 3. He is the owner of "The Chaos Theater" (A reference to EarthBound), in NYC and "GGG Heavy Industries," which is opening "Chaos Theater Toronto". Ramona has also "worked" for him previously, though her work is implied to be sexual in some way, and he eventually makes contact with Scott. There is also a small cat living at Ramona's house by the same name. He is set to appear in the final volume.

I'd prescribe a dose of actually reading the comics (they are pretty fantastic, all things considered) and cracking open a thesaurus the next time you want to use the word slutty but aren't really sure if it fits (I've found that most instances of its use usually don't).

Things that just hit me with that commercial.

Brandon Routh's recent Chuck appearances have me really excited to see him play a douchebag again.

Chris Evans nonchalantly-evil gruff is great. And this may be just the Arrested Development nerd in me, but he sounds very Will Arnett/GOBish, which is always great.

I know the bread gag is straight from the comics, but the way Cera played it made it sound like the perfect ad-lib.

Behold as I step in and mediate a dispute that no one asked or wanted me to, as I, hearing the potential for injustice, must indeed step forward and interfere! And probably irritate both parties! (Sorry in advance, if I do, it's not really intended!) For great JUSTICE!

As there were no results in the thesaurus, I went to the dictionary. Note: I've left out a number of meanings of each of the words, and emphasized some things, however that's to a) save time/space on anyone reading this (as are the swap tags - the definitions are rather bloated) and b) make the point more obvious: that she does, in fact, seem more slutty with each "boyfriend" on her list.

pro·mis·cu·ous definition

First, I'd like to note, that this is only apparent "sluttiness", not definative sluttiness - I'm not argueing that she is a slut, only that she could be taken to be.

How does she seem slutty? Well, as things slowly progress the number of her boyfriends is impressive (but, hey, at least it's not eleven!). But more, it starts with Roxanne. The implication is that she was curious, sure, but didn't really love Roxanne, and used her for her own means, "selling" her body (without saying so) in an unworthy manner. Kyle and Ken - simultaneously - means that she was being (apparently) promiscuous - having more than one partner simultaneously (promiscuity being part of the definition of slut). Gideon was apparently trading sexual favors for business ones - very prostitutish (and thus slutty).

To Conclude: Lumenskir, considering you were talking to someone who does not speak English as his native language, I believe you owe him an apology, as Bells seemed to be using "slutty" better than you! If you wish to argue that it's a misconception, however, that's totally valid (at least from what I know), although even then, one of the themes of the book, to my understanding, is that she considers herself to be a slut and a "bad person". You're a pretty smart guy, but Bells seems to have been completely justified in his perception.

ALL THAT SAID:
DUDE, this movie looks awesome! I'm excited to see it, even though originally I didn't know if I would be. The comedic timing seems spot on, with enough "out there" moments being totally accepted in-world, that I'm highly impressed. Thank you, Living Bobbeh, for not only making this thread (putting Scott Pilgrem on my radar at all) but also for the YouTube links!

TL;DR - I'm not going to apologize, because telling someone to think before they throw out slut isn't a statement that needs forgiveness. Also, again, read the actual comics, they are great.

'Impressive'? What, for a girl? Leaving aside the nebulous seriousness of some of the 'boyfriends' (again, the first one was for a week and a half and they barely even kissed (Ramona's words)), how is the fact that she's dated (not serially fucked, actually had some form of relationship with) seven guys a part of your sluttiness calculus?
Quote:

"Selling her body without saying so"...I'll say, seeing as she (and the entire comic) never even hints that anything remotely like prostitution occurred. Again, actually reading something beyond a Wiki-blurb would have cleared this up (and been a lot more enjoyable), but she did actually did just go through a phase with Roxanne (they were roommates, she was teaching Ramona the quirks of her job, their lesbian fling seems like an outgrowth of that), and we don't know much of anything about Gideon, but there haven't been any hints that 'business' came into it (the most we have is her dream of being submissive to Gideon and Envy's vague hints that Ramona inflated her relationship status).

Also, I love 'an unworthy manner'. The personal choices she made were 'unworthy'...ok.

But really, this is all mostly explained by clearing up one misconception-
Quote:
one of the themes of the book, to my understanding, is that she considers herself to be a slut and a "bad person"
She might consider herself a bad person/unworthy, but mostly because she has committment issues that being in proximity to Scott is making her work out. Again, these were all relationships, not random hookups. Maybe if the main thrust of the book was "You have to defeat my seven worst one-night stands, all of them from the past week" you might have some ground to stand on, but these are seven guys spread over 10+ years. The books make the point of showing how Ramona and Scott's relationship is a growing process for both parties: Scott is maturing, while Ramona is forced to confront some of her issues that prevent her from connecting with someone.

Has she done things that are wrong? Of course, with cheating on the twins being the most prominent...although that revelation came at the same time it was revealed that Scott had started dating her while also dating Knives. However, some of the things you label as wrong (like her not returning Roxanne's love equally) are better explained with committment issues (she had trouble feeling the same amount of attraction and began to drift away) than 'sluttiness' (she was...selling herself...for no money or tangible benefits). To label her a slut is just using a really broad brush to obscure the individual trees of her character and...another metaphor.

Now, with all that being said, I'm not against the word slut, just that you can't (or at least shouldn't) throw it around based on a Wiki-article. The old one of Sex and the City, the one who rubs yams on her vagina so she can sleep with a different guy every night with no emotional connection, yeah, that's an easier thing to label as slutty with little detective work. But just seeing that a girl has had seven boyfriends, without knowing anything beyond that, isn't a proper basis for thinking she's slutty, in fiction or real life. Now you know, and Knowledge Is Power!

ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THE MOVIE NOW

Ok, fine, you're absolutely great as Wallace, Culkin, no need to rub it in with these great line readings (P.S. I am absolutely kidding, keep at it).

Also, gotta love the VS. graphic. The only thing better would have been boss subtitles. And its good to see that they weren't afraid to differ from the comic in regards to fights. I loved the anti-climaxiness of the Lee fight in the book, but going with the "fights and musical numbers" motif means you need to (expertly) beef up or tweak some of them.

Is the fact that he keeps getting money in the form of coins for beating them a reference to River City Ransom, or just video games in general? I caught the Clash at Demonhead reference, haha.

I'll have to look into reading the comic I suppose, it sounds pretty funny.

Videogames in general, but there is an extensive homage to River City that's quite awesome.

And all of the band names are pretty direct videogame references.
