Practicing modeling. Particularly, edgeflow and efficient use of time. This got done in about 2-3 hours of work, which I don't think is terrible for going in without any plan beyond a quick sketch.

Have you tried Z-brush at all? I've never used it personally (Don't 3D model), but a lot of people I know who do model love it.
FakeEdit: It looks good! Don't get me wrong. Realized I didn't say anything about the model itself.

I did a lot of posting on here as a teenager, and I was pretty awful. Even after I learned, grew up, and came to be on the right side of a lot of important issues, I was still angry, abrasive, and generally increased the amount of hate in the world, in pretty unacceptable ways. ZBrush employs a very, very different form of modeling than Maya and, currently, will not help me practice my skills.

The question was more, "Why are you working using just primitives?" Most people I've spoken to have said that modeling in ZBrush is a lot easier, faster, and more enjoyable, even if it's much different.

Zbrush also costs a kidney and a half if you aren't in school. Then it's just the half.
