Here is a sketch I'm currently working on. I swapped it because it shows an undetailed lady's nipple, in a tasteful manner, so I guess it's NSFW but it's really not porny or anything:

This is the stock photo I used as a reference (it's also NSFW as it features full nudity, although again, it's fairly obvious that it's for art purposes.)

I messed up a bit because her torso is not leaning enough to the left in comparison to the stock photo. Not sure if the finished product will look like it has messed up legs. I plan on outlining it with black ink and then colouring it in brightly, with lots of ombre and shit.

I like that your "messed up" sketch is better than most of the finished products people are showing in the photo's page.

Almost ten years ago my current roommate attempted to launch a webcomic. He only managed eleven story comics (plus some filler updates) before it tapered off a year later. But he had an amazing story that was developed enough to support years of material. I've been pestering him off and on over the last decade to work on it more. Now we're thinking maybe we'll try again with me taking over the art duties. So I've spent the last week or so sketching like a madman.

Here's his most recent art of the four characters I've started with.

So here are my first attempts at rendering them in something closer to my style:

Next I tried fully remaking one of his comics.

I did a test-inking in Photoshop, but I'm not happy with the quality. The tablet pen hurts my hand for some reason--I actually colored this one with a mouse like the old days...


Then, while I was trying to nail down the body shapes, this happened:

Inked this one on paper, though I still had to use the tablet to clean it up and to shade. I happier with the look (disregarding some of the messed up proportions on this one which became much more apparent once it was colored).

I've got four or five more main characters to figure out next. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere near as much reference material for those. None, in two cases. So that'll be interesting.

Well, no worries on that front, 'cause that's not what's going on at all. These characters are pretty well rounded. I mean, yes, the main three are fairly geeky, but they're not defined by the clothing they happen to be wearing in the first chapter of the story. :P Well, Erc does have an unhealthy obsession with shoujo manga, but that's not, like, his defining character trait or anything. And as far as I'm aware Megumi isn't really nerdy at all.

The comic is kinda hard to describe without giving away all the surprises, but at it's core it's a martial artsy / sword and sorcery fantasy with geeky character-driven humor and healthy doses of romance and drama. It's got everything from a Zelda themed restaurant (Rupee Thursdays!) to dinosaurs to armies of the undead to awkward love triangles. Secret pasts, betrayal, elemental magic, really damn big axes. I dunno. Lots of stuff.

Anyway, did a new sketch page for another character this morning. Here's Alicia's BFF, Lydia.

Attempting a background with Alecia and Lydia. They're both high school seniors. (So is Megumi, but she goes to a different school. Erc and Dex are college freshmen.)



More hand inking. I think my skills with the brush are actually getting worse maybe. Tried a slightly different style of coloring. (Also it came up that the roommate's old computer monitor was off in its colors a bit, so the color sample sheet I've been working off of is skewed--to point, Alecia is supposed to have Auburn hair, not orange.)
