Like JC123 said, this encompasses all online games, not just FPSs or MMOGs, etc. Most of my female friends play some form of game online, whether it be on Yahoo! Games, MSN Zone, or EQ.

Most of my girlfriends have played games online. EQ/WoW/Yahoo!/Fairyland/etc. Heck, I met my fiancee in EQ. And she plays D&D. And she kicks my butt at PS2 fighting games. Beat that.

ArlanKels will become famous soon enough. Eventually. Maybe.

Does this count old women who are playing those free downloadable games from yahoo/etc?

Eh..nevermind, just looked at the wickerpie above me and saw the answer.
Accursed pie. Accursed pie.

A massive amount of women play at www.pogo.com, or supposedly according to the gender attributes chosen. I wouldn't be shocked to find that it's very much a "housewife gamer" thing.

I was going to mention Pogo, actually. However, I tend to believe that a lot of them are men just because of the way people act there(80% of them are kids talking about how big their dicks/boobs are). That's not considering the housewife category, which a lot of them also fall into though.

I shouldn't knock the site though. It's because of an insanely good checkers player I met there that I've gotten as good at the game as I am now.

I agree. I've made quite a few good girl friends (in the platonic sense, of course) online.

Edit: As for "real" girls playing male characters in MMORPGs, I don't think it's as true as some believe. I mean, I've certainly seen it done to avoid the nonsense, but more often than not, I've found that "primary" characters tend to be the player's own gender. That's just personal experience though.

Edit: Also, I think the "online gamers are all inevitably fat, greasy, and ugly irl" stereotype is unhealthy for everyone. It's not entirely untrue; you do tend to meet more social misfits online, but it's nowhere near as true as people like to think. Personally, I've only actually found that one or two of my online friends have weight issues irl, and not all that bad.

You know what? I just realized that I don't know one girl in real life who plays MMOs or online FPSs. Most of the time I hang out with girls more than guys due to the lack of the "soopper peenus joke lawl!" stuff.

Actually, come to think it, I don't know many online gmaers at all.

*is sad*

Well, it is definitely true that the sterotype of "gamers = ugly" is a load of bull. What I found is that most gamers don't hold their looks/personality/attractiveness in high regard, or that they're social recluses IRL.

It's not too surprising for me to hear that lots of girls play games. Pretty much all of my girlfriends did, and often if I mention the more popular games other girls I wouldn't have pinned as gamers would add in their own comments on the gameplay. In reality, it's more about location and the type of game involved.

I know at least 3 girls who play either console or online games or a mix of both. It's not so rare anymore to know a female gamer, but yes it seems a bit far fetched that 64% of online gamers are women. I suppose it makes more sense with the whole pogo.com thing, but I rather doubt that that same 64% is playing Halo 2.

I'd like to take this moment to agree with Magus, I find nothing more boring than an MMORPG or any RPG for that matter, also in that catagory is SIMs suck. I think video games are just something to do to pass the time when you feel like gaming, same as reading a book, lifting wieghts, napping, taking a walk, etc.. In todoy's society it is no longer 'nerdy', that has passed on to anime for the most part. In that same vein gamers are no longer the social cast aways and funny looking people they were in yesteryear. Ok that was about it I'm kinda sleepy and can't form coherent sentances anymore, but I meant to make a point, honest!

Well the amount of people interested in anime is increasing as well, so eventually considering it strange will fall shorter as well. As generations die off, things once considered deviant are considered normal and new things are found to find strange or socially inept. Video games are simply a free time activity in lieu of watching television for me. It's not as if I don't read plenty of books to pass the time or hang out with my friends as well.
