If Vriska tells John the whole truth and John decides to rashly attempt to save his father despite Vriska's forewarnings of his impending death, I'd say then the blame would lie solely with John (even if his reaction is only natural), not Vriska.

I perceive John as the type as the type who'd actually listen to aforementioned forewarnings, and he's kneejerkingly followed Vriska's advice before.

Also, it's important to compartmentalize Vriska lying to John about seeing his father again as a separate action from Vriska simply keeping John sufficiently preoccupied to effectively prevent him from reuniting with Dad and running into Jack.

...Simply put, there are ways Vriska could have ensured John's survival without outright lying to him on an issue as important to John as seeing his father again. It may have been a slightly more difficult conversation, but it could have been done. Just lie in telling John that he absolutely has to do the Tumor task now in order to give Rose a chance to succeed in her quest, without actually promising him that he'd see his father again.

You honestly think he's going to listen to Vriska's "BUT YOU'LL DIE!" bit rather than run off to save his father? Every protagonist in everything ever is going to run off to save their parent figure because they love their parent figure and either succeed magically, which wouldn't happen here, or get stopped before they can kill themselves. Vriska could stop him by having him fall asleep, but then he can't accomplish anything worthwhile because he'll be asleep.

Her lying to him about seeing his father again could also be seen as a lie so that he will go after the Tumor. If John feels safe in knowing he'll see his dear old Dad again, he won't worry about it while doing the important stuff he'll have to do. If she dances around the answer or whatnot while that's the current thing on his mind, he will worry about it while trying to go after the Tumor, assuming he listens at all. Bear in mind that while John normally listens to Vriska, he's never before been in a situation where he's listened to her knowing that someone is going to die, as far as I can recall, so your assumption that he'll do as she says like a polite little Earthbaby is largely unfounded.
