also, I find it rather offputting that the only time this subforum ever seems to get any sort of attention is a spectacle like this. Can't be arsed to give constructive criticism on someone's honest attempt at art or literature, but woo boy lookie here, we got's ourselves a lynch mob!

Thats because mods are the dam that hold people back from stating how they really feel about things whenever they way people really feel about things is hate and revulsion. This isn't "The mods hate it so I must hate it" so much as "The mods hate it, and that must mean I'm allowed to hate it."

I mean, honestly, this story right here is bad. If the kid actually wants to be a writer, then he can go and study how to write, make an original storyline, and so on and so on, he is welcome to. Heck, I'm not such a great writer myself. I know I'm still learning and I surely couldn't write some 5 star book in a week.

I, however, do not go posting the first chapter of some unoriginal fanfiction circle jerk under the assumption that the entire forum will like it.

Honesty is one thing, sure you should be honest. It was a terrible piece of writing. But simply tearing it down more and offering nothing useful in return doesn't accomplish anything worthwhile, unless you're the sort of person who feels better when you're denigrating someone else.

On topic, the thing is that this fanfic really is that bad, and Kirby2000's comments lead me to believe he's largely ignoring the problems we're pointing out and the legitimate recommendations we've made, and I'm not going to be a nice sugar-coating fairy for someone who just disregards people's complaints. I mean, yeah, we were pretty dickish about it, but that's what this forum is.

I guess it doesn't help that we really don't go much for fanfic in here, unless it's astoundingly well written and/or a genre parody.

I mean I do try and give actual helpful advice, ya know, but at the point we're obviously at my advice can only be "go to the library and read ten books, then we'll talk more." (Incidentally, seriously do that. Pick any you like, try and see what the authors are doing to tell their story.) And I genuinely hope we're not alienating Kirby too much to post improved versions of his stuff here or anywhere else. But at the same time, let's call a spade a spade and terrible writing terrible writing.

Other than Meister's pictures (which are horrible in their own way), I'm of the opinion that this thread has degraded into an irredeemable shithole.

We get it, the kid sucks at writing and he isn't likely to try and improve at this stage, as much as try to justify his inadequacy. Har har jokes blah. Could we please just close this thread and forget it ever happened?

No, I'm pointing out that that argument is bullshit and has always been such. Age is no excuse if you are publishing something on a public forum where there is a tacit understanding that you might and almost certainly will receive criticism, hopefully of the constructive sort. It's not like outright mockings haven't happened here before.

No, we're "picking" on a kid for writing something that is objectively terrible.

Telling someone that something is bad and driving the point in repeatedly is not a bad thing if the thing in question is actually bad. I hate to keep bringing this up, but back when I was in Middle school Creative Writing, everyone got told their stuff was terrible and that they needed to improve it, and here's how you improve it. Pretty much everyone came back improved, and we did it again and again.
