"We're being attack by an enemy we know nothing about and they also have powerful shields that only Gurren Lagann has been able to break through. Let's arrest its pilot to make an idiot populace temporarily happy."
I'm probably being hard on him, but you can't argue that his little posse isn't full of complete and utter douchebag yesmen. They piss me off more than anything.

The spoilerz, they're getting out of hand.
Yes, he was a douchebag. Yes, he did wrong. So? Simon forgave him. Why can't you? Why, NC? Why? =( Last edited by Regulus Tera; 08-08-2008 at 05:57 PM. |

Because I don't have volume 3 yet and thus he hasn't yet earned his forgiveness.

He stabbed Simon in the back over something absolutely no one could have possibly foreseen. He forced people out of their homes and into his city AT GUNPOINT so he could take a census over the dying words of a very evil man, and imprisoned the guy who tried to protect them. And his version of "justice" makes The Trial of the Superfriends look fair by comparison. Yeah, the situation merited some extreme measures, but Rossiu pretty much threw his humanity right out the window as a result of a single riot. That man was looking for an excuse, and I don't care how much they showed him crying later on. He was a giant douche about the whole thing too. Can you imagine if we executed presidents and prime ministers based on a single protest? He didn't even *attempt* to explain things. He was a politician in all the worst ways. I will grant that he was dealing with an unusually perceptive and volatile population though. It's one thing to be practical and make sacrifices. It's another to throw your humanity out the window and execute the guy who made your entire society even possible. It's not like there were no other options, either. He just freaked out.

So we are clear
|
to be safe, spoiler
it wasn't one small riot, it was a good chunk of the population. Its kinda hard to calm people down when it is, litterally, the end of the world. The population wanted someone to blame, so they did. This is something goverments often do, they scapegoat someone, a group of people, or even an entire nation. He gave them someone to blame, the only person they'd accept, they were calling for his head to begin with if you recall. It wasn't like he thought "hmm now who could I blame, ah I know Simon". The people blamed Simon, he was the one that blew that thing up, the one that caused the massive destruction of the city when he did, and was the one involved with the spokeswoman of the enemy.

He still jumped to "sacrifice my friend and our society's greatest hero" rather quickly, and he never so much as considered any other options. His PR machine consisted of Kittan yelling at people on the phone. We also saw early on that he was pretty fed up with the Gurrens who'd stayed in the government. He made his feelings about them very clear, and the second he had a chance to take over, he took it.
It may not have been lust for power that drove him, but that doesn't make him any less of a bastard.

What I didn't like is how everyone simply forgot about Simon and Kamina and blamed them for everything. Roshiu/Rossiu does everything he can to make it so it looks even more like that. Also, Rossiu, a few episodes earlier, tells some scientists that they're "This new generation."...That is actually said in the original? Because he's at most 3 years older than them.

Even if you support Rossiu's actions, he was a total douche in how he went about it. He didn't apologize or try and explain things better to Simon. He basically said, "Well, those people don't like you so bye. Also, it's a good thing Kamina died."
Also, arresting Simon didn't do a damn thing. The populace kept rioting and bitching and moaning.

Can we talk about something else? I mean sure, he made a bad decision, but he made a decision. One that only ever had the safety and well-being of as many people as he could save. Sometimes people have to make the hard decisions and are despised for it.
