It could have just been carrier issues through a certain route or set of routes

Just did a bit of looking this up. Its actually not the size of the map that causes lag, but the rate at which player movement forces it to load new terrain*. Normally this will only be one big spike when they spawn and slow loading when they move around, but player warping can apparently cause massive lag. Perhaps the best way to improve ping will be to make the map more foot-travel friendly and cut down on warping by removing it or putting a cooldown on it?
*New terrain as in anything not currently within view distance of the player, doesn't matter if its already been generated serverside. |

Perhaps a little canal system can be carved out? It'd help with foot traffic.

Well, if we work on a full planned city we can even have a fully working Railroad network with some creativity and thinking

Yeah, a railroad network/subway would be so amazing.
Though the only thing that makes me hesitant on both a canal system and railroad system is that minecarts are laggy as hell on SMP, which kinda made my attempt at a rollercoaster pretty bad. I also tried using a boat to cross the water to my mineshaft and the server lagged like crazy after each time I used one. |

Im Really good with carts. If you provide some carts track and a few bits of stone I could build you a Automatic cart system with little to no trouble.
I put a MAGIC donation box at spawn. If the mods would like to fill it with meterials I can get the job done the next time I am there

Even if I am reluctant to lose my current stuff, the idea of a brand new NPFopolis map is intriguing. I like the idea of splitting players into teams based on building specialties if we do something like that; you can balance out a good engineer with someone who's good at detail work, and so on.
