I may as well do a rundown of my thoughts on the official maps in the TF2 thread. The servers I frequent run a lot of customs, though.

I never liked the Payload maps. It just doesn't seem as fun to play a map with a pre-determined path, with massive defenses strewn along the way. 2Fort gives you more freedom, letting you mess about and have your fun. It has a clear objective, but the gmae doesn't end prematurely because someone's not pushing a cart.

Making well organized "fronts" for two teams to battle on is really the butter of good multiplayer FPS, and goes beyond TF2. Some freedom is okay, but having highly predictable areas of fighting always makes a better game. And all the more awesome when you can find a way to get the jump on people.
Edit: I agree with Jagos above that the Intel seems ridiculously defendable in 2fort, which kind of turns 2fort into a Deathmatch server. But that isn't *really* a bad thing. Also I've personally witnessed a Heavy using only the Boxing Gloves of Killing get the Intel with engys defending, so, all is not lost. |

Engineers can be countered with good spies. It's a solid map that's a little overplayed, but with good reason. It's best with a good group of people, with a strong list of pros for every class. It's a good map.

Good engineers easily counter spies.
Saps your sentry? Shoot him/wrench him. All classes have a unique 'placing sapper' animation, so if you're paying attention, you'll see who slapped the sapper. Tries to shoot/stab you while sentry sapped? Dodge while unsapping sentry. Tries to stab/sap? Watch your back. But this is the only method that really works solo, especially if the engie is distracted by other people attacking. Tries to Ambassador snipe? Wrangler. Tries to telefrag? Don't stand on your teleporter. Obviously, if you can co-ordinate with a team member to sap as they simultaneously attack, that's much better. But that's why the game is called TEAM Fortress 2.

Or Seil the Engy could just convince Azi the Heavy to sit there in the corner dispenser and shoot the narrow hallway for the entire match. I have a good elastic for my mouse and everything!

Engies aren't immune to backstabs, and if you can either sap a sentry 'till it's gone, sap it 'till a team member finishes it off or kill the Engineer guarding it, then it shouldn't be a problem. I've done combinations of the three within a few shot moments.
EDIT Seriously, with all the new toys and gizmos for the classes, it's super-fun. |
