Well, he also left before that in Orange Islands and got replaced by a guy named Tracy, but then Tracy left and Brock came back at some unspecified point after I'd stopped watching.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but really seems to have left on a basically permanent basis this time. And, like I said, the show basically said what that comic did about Brock's life and dreams not going much of anywhere while he hangs around with Ash when he did. It's like, whoever wrote that is just pointing out stuff the fans and writers are well aware of.
