Default Star Wars first time through

So I'm going to introduce my young cousins to Star Wars. I'm going to show them all six (yes the prequels are terrible but good fun for the younger ones) the only question is what order I should show them in.
There's the chronological order, 1-6 or I could show the original trilogy first. I'm leaning towards the latter because it preserves the whole Vader=Luke's father surprise and Vader is such a great villain that he doesn't deserve to be wussed down by Annakin.
Of course I'm biased by the order in which I saw them and my dislike for the sequels.
Any other opinions on the matter? What is the best way to show the movies for a first time viewer?

I see no problem with running 4-6 then 1-3, since it wont hurt to have a story happen, then a story to explain the background. Plot-chronological order is by no means necessary. Mind you, running 1-6 means that (roughly) the movies will just get better as they go on, which isn't an awful thing.

Alternatively, use science and show one 1-6 and one 4-6-1-3 and if possible grab another 98 or so kids for a better sample, then find some kind of way to measure the mean movie enjoyment like a questionairre with ratings going 1-10 or 'strongly disliked' to 'strongly liked' on various aspects of the movie.

You might need a control group who just see the movies in a randomly determined order.

go 4-6 so that the experience of the originals isn't tarnished by having 1-3. That way there won't be the badly tacked on retconning (see R2 and C3PO) existant on the viewings.

When my brother first introduced my nephew to Star Wars he did it 4-6 and then 1-3, and my nephew absolutely loves star wars now, so I don't see any harm in doing it that way. Plus, I kind of think that's the order their meant to be seen in, personally.

Plus, nobody would really care about young Anakin unless they already knew Anakin was going to turn into Darth Vader so that helps with that.

It also depends on how old these cousins are, and whether they are more into 'ZOMG SPECIAL FX!!!" or they actually like good movies with with good stories...

If its the former, they'll probably enjoy 1-3 more. However, everybody knows 4-6 are the far better stories...

The entire draw of the prequel movies was supposed to be watching Anakin turn into Vader. You'd be better off showing them 4-6 first.

Too many of the plot twists were ruined by 1-3, not just the Anakin Vader thing, but what about scenes like finding out this short old swamp dwelling hermit is one of the greatest jedi of all time or that Luke and Leia are twins. I suppose 4-6 also ruined some things like who would become the emperor, but it was rather minor plus if they are young they might not pick up on it.

although I agree with your logic i dont agree with your approach. True flashy special effects might be what they like, and thus love 1-3. But after that, to them, 4-6 would seem like a massive downgrade. If they dont care about story, then there is no reason to not go with what 'to them' would be progressively better movies.

Original trilogy à œuf. Though I actually prefer the new trilogy to the old (I'M A HATER AND I DESERVE TO DIE), Vader's tragedy has more impact if you watch what he became first and then how did it happen.

Good idea. Just say tell them that 1-3 was a bad dream or something.
