Bionic Commando (The new one for PS3/360)
So I picked it up this Saturday, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Controls are great & level design is right up there. Music & story are really engaging too.
My biggest complaint would be the loading times & the collection of findables. The problem with the loading time isn't any worse than most games, but every time you die the whole level has to be reloaded & it doesn't seem to be any faster after you've played through the first time. Then again, I currently don't have access to high speed internet at the moment & maybe I just haven't been able to access a patch for this. The problem with findables, is that if you die, they respawn & you've got to recollect them. Again, this might be something that gets patched. Or these could be flaws that only effect the PS3 version. Anyone else have any comments? (Or have some fun stories of pulling subway cars on top of the baddies?) SWB

GameFly is being a douche and hasn't sent it to me yet.
Looking forward to it though.

Unfortunately those aren't flaws and haven't been patched/changed (yet). I've finished it and started replaying at higher difficulty, in hopes that its one of those games that 'rewards' you with more story for beating it again. Because the last part of the story feels rushed, unfinished and unsatisfying after the build up the first 2/3.
The thing I find most exceptional about the game is that I rarely got frustrated with it. Even if I died 10 or more times on the same part I rarely went 'stupid frickin game/controls/ai/cheapness' and instead said 'gah I've gotta be better/pay more attention'. My biggest disappointment in the game is the boss battles. Too scarce and the ones that do exists are unfun games of pattern dodge/shoot/throw, whereas the mecha things (can't recall the names now) were a better/more engaging challenge even if they boiled down to 'get behind them'. They were varying degrees of maneuverable machines that put my swinging/shooting/reaction skills to the test. Also I'd like to say to a great gulf of reviewers out there (and to people who may read those reviews and shy away from the game) learn to swing like a man! The game has flaws but I've read far too many reviews that complain about not being able to swing like they want to (some even cited specific instances) when while I played through the game I was able to do all the things they're talking about. Case in point one reviewer said he was disappointed in the first free-fall immediately after getting his bionic arm ending with him running on the ground and into the tunnel instead of swinging from the neon signs, while my experience was free falling, grabbing onto a sign and swinging from one to the next until I got to the tunnel mouth. Also remember kids you don't lose the ability to swing while engaged in a firefight. |

okay to cover things:
- Check the credits. I forget if my name is on them or not- it might have done just the senior testers on this project. [Or just our rival company who tested the game at the same time. >.>] - There is no additional story, and the story at the end HURTS when you read it. OH BY THE WAY YOUR MISSING WIFE IS ACTUALLY YOUR BIONIC ARM WE HAD HER KILLED AND MADE HER INTO A ROBOTIC BODY PART AND YOU'RE NOT SUPER PISSED ABOUT THIS RIGHT? - Findable/collectibles must have changed on the last minutes of design- some were placed in areas where you HAD to die to collect them, while I was on the project. |

What's your name (as it would appear in the credits) because I'm gonna feel like a fool if I spend the day looking for Nikose Tyris.
Damn no additional story! Mega spoilers ahoy. It's less the whole your wife is your arm thing that pisses me off (I guessed that about halfway through after reading the note about Spencer gazing at his empty arm socket or whatever), but more the dangling dangling plot threads that are never explained. Who was the sniper that saved your life? Why did Super Joe betray the FSA? Seriously why the hell would Super Joe ever work with Groeder? What the hell did the Carrion project do exactly? Just start up those robots/power suit?WHY THE HELL DID SUPER JOE COMMIT TREASON!? |

Look for "Alex MacNeil", hax.
Also after the credits they imply a sequel but I swear to god they won't end up doing one. Did you hear about the mass layoffs in company? |

Personally, from what I've played so far, I can't see Capcom not eventually making some kind of sequel from this, its just a question of whether Grin is involved or not. Still, I'm curious why Grin was in much trouble to begin with. I'd have thought that Bionic Commando: Rearmed, seeing how well recieved it was, would have helped. SWB

Hopefully the layoffs won't effect Bionic Commando 2, and are just aimed at secondary staff and those responsible for the Terminator: Salvation game. I was surprised when I saw GRIN had put out that as well. |

Hey, anyone paying attention to this thread? I'm finding a bionic guy (end boss?) & I can't figure out how to beat him. I can dodge the blue jumps & attack his back, but have no clue how to dodge the purple attacks (except occasionally by luck).
Also, I'm dead once those zat drones show up. Any help would be appreciated. SWB

The purple (they looked red to me) dash attacks can be dodged by rolling left or right as soon as you see him flash red. When the drones show up keep moving and watch Groeder (at the beginning of the game you didn't know he survived the original so spoiler tagged.). They didn't hit me too often as long as I kept running. Although I also recall saving a bulldog for this fight and unloading it on him near the end, but after trying again it didn't seem to do damage. Maybe I just did that after his attacks instead of the zip kick. Something to consider.
Edit to say: I love the fact that he psuedo-quotes Hitler at the start of that fight. |
