Video Games DCU Online: Beatdowns for all!

Woooh

I got DCU Online, for the PS3, and it's actually incredibly fun. Combat is enjoyable and fairly fast paced. Missions are sort of the same thing of any MMO, Beat the hell out of each other till you killed the enemies or got the items. Game is fairly open world, Loading screens only for Instances and between the 3 main area's you'll be in. Watchtower, Gotham or Metropolis.

Sad that Wonder Woman has no city to call her own, could have done something there then toss her in Metropolis to, but it's not that big of a downer. A hero has a mentor and the mentor affects story oriented missions and such, which you can only get if you have that mentor, but others can help you do the missions and instances.

The game has an interesting concept were you don't really kill steal or anything. You can help kill a mob and still get the items from it as it splits between all those who did damage to them. It's a good thing for the missions that are in the world maps as those can be insane clusterfucks of totally beatdowns. They pretty much have hero missions right on top of villain missions making the missions part doing it and part PvP(if you're on a PvP world or want PvP.) The missions are quick and fun, and the added PvP beatdownage adds to the whole hilarity of it all. Had a mission were it turned into pretty much a 10 vs 10 battle and was actually loads of fun, even though it made the mission take longer, it had a great feel to the whole Hero vs Villain thing the game is going for.

Boss fights are interesting, could be better though. Game also has a good chunk of Solo and Group things to do. You can go on Alerts were you group up with 3 other heroes(or go in one with a predetermined group) and fight harder mobs and bosses. Only problem with that is, people tend to all go into it as the Damage role instead of Healer, Controller or Tank roles. Makes it harder but it's livable.

Game is incredibly fun, fat paced and has an easy learning curve. The interface can use some work, but it's actually well done for a Controller based game on the Console. Max level is 30 you upgrade your guy by spending power points and skill points. You get more Skill points as you do "feats"(aka Achievements) which is pretty cool feature.

Anyone else get this game?

I need to know a few things before I buy:

1) Subscription based on PS3?
2) If yes on 1, give me a sub price.
3) Servers? If yes, which one are you guys running?
4) Are PS3 and PC servers the same?
5) Is this entirely an MMO, or is there some single player aspect too?

Yes it's a subscription for the PS3, and pricing can be found here.

From the site's FAQ:

Quote:
Q: Is the game playable across both platforms?
A: We want DC Universe Online to be an experience that's fun, rewarding and balanced for both console and PC gamers, so we've decided to keep the platforms separate.
I couldn't find anything about servers other than that you can choose between PVE or PVP servers.

I'd be interested in this if it didn't require a subscription, that's my main turn off from many MMOs.

Wow, that is expensive. I may try the PC version if I can get a free trial first.

It's an MMO. But you can do all missions within the world solo, granted there are other people doing them as well, but spawn rates and the fact if you do even the slightest bit of damage to a mob, you get the exact same stuff the guy who killed em gets makes the missions quick enough you don't need to spawn camp, they have Solo instances that follow along with the quests Involves usually assisting or helping a DC Hero or Villain.

Alerts that you join are Groups, then there are the raids which is for 8 people.

The cool part is that they have "Duos" so for those who don't like RAIDing but have a buddy they play with can do those for cool gear as opposed to RAIDs only. Still need to do RAIDS to get the best of the best stuff, but the Duo stuff isn't half bad.

Right now, I find it addicting and fun. Combat's fun enough that I don't get bored with it. I find it long term for me, I played the Beta long enough and didn't get bored with it at all. Usually an MMO bores me withing 3 to 4 months, going on 5 months including Beta time, so it's better then my average so far.

Character creation is fun, don't have many costumes to chose from at the start, but gear drops unlock costume items as you go along so you can get some pretty cool costumes out there.

Combat styles and powers are simplistic. Everyone has a damage role and then another role based on the power they chose. Since 30 is max level, if you like making tons of new characters and experimenting with power and weapon combination, it's pretty cool that way.

Right now money is easy to get and seems pointless. I think the whole point of them game is to get to 30 and start duoing and raiding, but the Duo option is what reeled me in.

They may or may not in the future make a joint server for PS3 and PC owners, but I dunno about that. There are a lot of people wanting them to do that. The game seemed insanely popular at launch as every place was sold out, my brother visited 5 gamestops, 3 future shops and 2 best buys before getting the game and all the best buy had left was the CE.

The price alone puts this rather solidly in the 'not worth it' region for me. Internet connection and lack of free time are the other reasons. >.>
