Movies Man of Steel - Final Trailer

So, little peck of upbeat news anyone?

New superman movie! C'mon... Iron Man 3 is already dawning on us, but Supes! Supes is suppose to change the game here... Marvel is going for Round Two of their Movie Making dominance, and they seem to be starting strong...

Superman is supposed to be the final non-shitty counter to that offensive... can they do it?

This is the final trailer, the one that set us for the whole thing... there might be a new teaser here or there, but this is the final montage. it shows us everything we need to know for the story... and here is what i took from it.

1) Be prepared for a good hour of humanizing backstory before Superman puts the cape.

2) They did the "ooooooh he was going to say superman but they got cutoff so they didn't ..." bit. ok movie... you get ONE of those. don't push it.

3) Be prepared for a lot of Zoom in action while two super beings cover great distances towards each other in seconds.

4) They explained the S with an Alien origin. That is actually a big relief to prevent corniness

All and all this is an Origin story, and i expect it to be good. Seems like there will be a lot more action, which the previous one was severely lacking... while not forgetting to tell us a character piece.

If we care to compare it to two other movies, one DC and one Marvel, i would say that the fair comparison is with Batman Begins and the first Iron Man movie. it's been a while since those came out... but i'm expecting to see that again.

Thing is, right now... Batman begins would pale in comparisson to what Iron Man 3 seems to be promising. Its a different game from when we started all those years back... they have their buffer window between the two movies, but comparisons are inevitable. So i guess its not completely unfair to say that as competent as Man of Steel seems to be right now... its an uphill battle if DC really wants to get it right this time.

Does it mean hope? I thought it meant El. Since it's the family's sigil and that's their last name. Or is hope what El stands for? Eh, whatever.

Still confused why the woman says, "My son was on the bus! He saw what Clark did!" when it's clearly Lana Lang sitting there. Maybe her son is also on there, I guess.

They seem to avoid showing all the CGI stuff involving Zod and his space ships or wahtever because I bet it's kind of hokey and as you said, probably only involved in about half the movie, since they are going for a pretty strong Batman Begins parallel here.

It looks worth watching, so that's a big step up for Superman movies.

I don't know about going in-depth in the origin story that's already been successfully distilled in eight words, but maybe it's the sort of movie that can make us care about the same story we've heard a thousand times before.

You could say the trailer gives me. . .hope

The problem is Snyder's attempt at making you care mostly seems to revolve around choir music and Superman sort of standing around looking thoughtful (sometimes in slow-mo).

Trailers are notoriously hard to use to figure out the films they represent, though.

DOH-HO-HO-HO-HO!!

Personally, I'm really excited.

My personal take on the Superman movies:

* Superman: pretty great! A couple minor plot holes, but whatevs.

* Superman 2: also pretty great! See Superman 1 (also Supes shacks up, but whatevs)

* Superman 3: ... no. This is officially the worst. Yes, it was intended as a comedy. That was a mistake. No, it wasn't really funny. Or interesting. It was confusing, plodding, and a Richard Prior movie that also happened to get some Superman on it.

* Superman 4: ... see? I told you. Not great, filled with really dumb plot-holes, but better than 3. Besides I was young and that yellow-suit guy was kind of scary (though how he has a suit, despite the explanation, is a mystery for the ages).

* Superman Returns: ... kiiiiiiiiiiiiiinda slightly disappointing, actually. Not terrible, and has some great moments, but Superman is characterized as a super-jerk and Lois seems to be a genuinely awful person, over-all, and I feel really sorry for whatshisnameforgetableguyLoismarried because he's really getting the short end of the... uh... "deal" with all this, and he's never done anything except be a pretty cool and awesome guy. In a way kind of like Episode 1 of Star Wars: there were some great things with some terrible things and it added up to an over-all "meh" movie. Luthor was hilariously flawlessly acted, though, and I'm pretty sure he channeled Gene, there (even if the ultimate "plan" was a little dodgy, it really fit with Gene's Luthor's earlier doofy ideas and executions). Really strange the sudden "youngening" of the characters, though. No where near as awful as "3".
(Incidentally, do you think that Lois's son with Supes was mostly lacking powers and had defects (such as asthma) because Supes was lacking powers due to weird radiation when he and Lois had sex the one time they did so?)

So anyway, I'm really hopeful for this movie. I've enjoyed four of the five of the movies (sometimes in spite of said movie, I must admit), and am feeling hopeful about this one.

I'm only excited for this movie if it's ninety minutes of Michael Shannon contorting his face and being intense.

I'd rather he was playing Nelson Van Alden than General Zod. Now that's a threat! PURITAN POWER!

Secret death plan for Superman: burn him horribly with hot (kryptonite) iron, have wife whack him over the head with a (kryptonite) club.

THEN COMES THE DROWNING (in liquid kryptonite)

I dunno man, I kind of dislike the part where it seems like Jor-El sent him to earth for a purpose ('he'll be a god to them', 'they'll follow you into the sun', etc). I always thought it was way more compelling to think that he was just sent blindly into the cosmos and that with all his power he CHOSE to be the big blue boy scout (due to the farm boy upbringing or whatever).

Seemed like that was in the comics and such, though. He specifically chose Earth because the yellow sun would make him godlike versus the native humans.

One part I liked about Smallville is it was actually not so much hope as "Go forth and rule these primitive apes with your godlike powers, Kal-El." Like condescending. This one is definitely more upbeat/not terribad Jor-El.

I guess you could argue that it is indeed like a mission from Jor-El that he should be a hero instead of arriving at it on his own, but then again he wanders America before going to the Fortress of Solitude and getting this message from what I'm seeing in this trailer, so there's still a large amount of his becoming Superman not based on knowing he's a special godlike alien, I would think.

I suppose it's worth noting that 95% of my exposure to superman is from the DCAU and so I'm not really all that knowledgable about the comics
