Village Mafia

Strung between the rain-lashed slopes of the Pyrenees the small village of Mareno was nevertheless an idyllic place. Capitalising on its protection of one of the few trade routes through the mountain it served as a small waystation for travellers seeking to move their wares. Such a desolute place attracted only a few hardy souls and they all got to know each other foibles and tells. Or so they thought.
For one crisp winters day, the townsfolks arose to see BHSTown LawMaker lying deading in the middle of the market square, with his new law concerning raised custom duties knived to his head.
Suddenly, everyone began to look at everyone else in a different light. People they'd know for years had become suspects. A few groups stuck together, like the friends who'd known each other for years. Also the resident Guildheads, sent from the cities to make sure no unauthorised tradesmen used the town as a base, stuck together to try and keep trade alive. Aside from this, however, accusations flew. Perhaps it was thier kindly new mayor who had done so much to promote trade in the last few years, perhaps it was the rather militant sheriff who was always looking for any opportunity to crack down, could it be the innkeeper who didn't want any laws that would restrict trade and thus his custom. It could be anyone.
