Huh, the topic title doesn't get highlighted when people post in this thread anymore, so as a result I don't notice any new games being posted. Odd.

Speaking of free music games like Stepmania and Frets on Fire, how about some love for osu!? Made specifically for the Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents fan in you, and it comes with a custom "step editor" that allows you to draw your own patterns. I really should get back to work on my beatmap for the long version of Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat"...

CardMaster Conflict - http://www.cardmasterconflict.com/
It's a free and fun CCG, with creations from the mind of Mark Shallow (creator of ADVENTURERS!, Antihero for Hire and more), featuring cameos of various other webcomic artists and in-depth player involvement. I've played over six thousand matches, personally, so I thought I'd give it a proper shout-out here. |

Magic Duel
This game promotes a non-spoiler attitude. Meaning, no player is allowed to tell you how to solve a quest, defeat an NPC, what this monster's stats are, etc... You develop your own strategy and find things out for yourself. It also greatly promotes role-play. Hints are ok in some cases. SOME. Players actually CREATE some of the quests and can GIVE A REWARD. If you have been part of the game for some time, you begin to have a say in how it expands. There is one player that is about to have his home/smithy actually integrated into the game. The house is already there, just needs an interior coded and drawn. There are some premium features available, but like most games they are not necessary. The plus side to the premium features is that EVERYTHING is only 1 dollar, regardless of it's power. The downside is that you have to have had so many active days (days that you actually logged on) or stats in order to be able to purchase about 60-80% of the premium items. I think this is mainly to prevent rich noobs from getting some powered up weapons and annihilate everything. It's a browser game, where every npc, monster and 'room' of the map is hand drawn. Creates a pretty nifty atmosphere. Also, if you are a good artist, they will pay you for your work. So you can become an even bigger part of the game. More details inside. That's all the cool stuff I can think of at the moment without spoiling anything. This is all stuff you can find out right away, and isn't related to story or quests or nuthin. Remember, if you join, try to think quick about your background and your role in the game. In some cases, how well your name fits with your role helps too. Summary: Medieval fantasy, heavy roleplay, spoiler-free, and the players can create quests and new aspects of the game and decide how it expands. |

A fun little TF2-esque third person shooter. You get experience and level up and earn money you can use to buy new weapons, and you level up abilities as you gain experience as well. Two factions (Allies and Nazis, although they don't go so far as to SAY that), and you can either be a spy-like thing, a heavy weapons guy, or a standard infantrymen. Has vehicles.

I can spend all day in this thread just posting stuff.
Ok, these may have already been posted and I missed them, so bear with me: Mabinogi. IMO, this is one of the only free MMO's to really compete with the commercial games. There's free games with better graphics, but this by far has the most dynamic gameplay. The amount of skills and things you can do are amazing.. You can even compose your own music, sit on a street corner, and get donations for entertaining people. Atlantica Online This is the other MMO which I believe can compete with the pay for ones. This is unique, for being a turn based MMO. Think Final Fantasy Tactics, with a timer. You can eventually accumulate up to 8 mercs, and in PvP you join other groups for big 100 on 100 battles.. It can get a bit nuts. The best thing about this game, is the cash shop is totally optional.. You can experience all the content, without ever spending a dime. Other games: Survival Crisis Z This used to be pay for, but now it's free. You're in a city filled with zombies, there's random safehouses populated by one of three factions, and you can take missions from any single faction. You can also simply take over houses by bombing them terrorist style breaking their resolve, or just beat them down the old fashioned way. It's a pretty fun game, and if the graphics were better it'd compete with Dead Rising or Resident Evil series as the best zombie themed games out there. Think GTA with zombies and no cars, and you'll get an idea how what this games about. |

I see Cave Story and Eternal Daughter was already posted. If you haven't already played Cave Story, I highly recommend it. It's too good to be a free game.
A recently released game called Iji is probably only second to Cave Story, IMO. It has a graphical style like Another World, and a pseudo-RPG system similar to the Deus Ex games. The game took four years to develop, and it shows. The game actually modify's the story based on your actions, for example if you try being a pacifist vs being a bloodthirsty killer, you'll get different logs and messages from the enemies. If you don't try anything else on the lists posted in this thread, I'd at least recommend trying Cave Story and Iji. I think they're the best of the best, and could've easily been an Xbox Live or PSN game, or at least justified being sold as a commercial product. One more recommendation: Kytt was posted on the first page, and it's a good game. But "Kytt Stories" is the sequel for Kytt and has been around for awhile now, and IMO is the superior game. It's actually a series of games or levels, with the download including one "level pack" consisting of the main game, and than you can download seperate level packs online (Both official and fan made) For the record, Knytt Stories was ported to the Nintendo DS, unofficially. .. |
