i think we're a fluke.

kind of like those artists that try to take credit for creating a "masterpiece" that's just a bunch of globs of paint that fell on a canvas. you know which ones i mean...

i'd say a happy mistake, but i really think people are awful, awful creatures.

slightly off topic but kind of on...anybody else a mistake baby? i was!

Pft, please don't comment on something you know nothing about, like art. You can have your own preferences, but don't feel free to just DUMP on a subgenre/style/signature/beat just. because. you. can't. DIG it.

Not that there's been any "bashing" going on, but I would just like to remind everyone that the paticular niche of creationism and beliving in a creator are not the same thing.

I guess I'm looking at this, as usual, somewhere in the middle. Yes, I belive in God, yes I belive the Bible, and yes I belive in a "literal" translation of the Bible... But 'literal' doesn't always mean literal if you understand me.

I don't think I need to get into it here, but the creationist viewpoint lacks a proper understanding of context and langauge esspecially in regards to the Bible. I mean, leave religion out of it - Does the Genesis narritive present to us Adam bringing home brontosaurous steaks? Pterodactyl eggs?

Honestly, I think this museum is making a mockery of religion. Yeah science too, but anymore I'm not sure what Atheists are complaining about with "religion" making such a ...Aaaaaaand the rest of this post probably goes into the religious thread.

Goodnight everybody!

Actually this entire conversation belongs in the Big Big Thread, so that's where it's gonna go.

This isn't the RO forum, Rai.

so for what i believe:

honestly? i really do think we were an energy fluke. i'm a reiki practitioner so i use energy work a lot, and that i believe in. that to me is tangible.

but a "higher power?" for personal reasons i refuse to believe in anything that would create man on purpose. or let it go on for as long as we as a race have.

although i wish very, VERY much that i did believe in god or a higher power...those people seem so much happier.

Just thought I'd weigh in a bit because had big argument about this at work:
Much like Nique I believe in a creator but not creationism in general. As a science student I can't fathom creationism or Intelligent design being taught as science but I have problems with evolution as a science as well.
Evolution is constantly hailed as the solution to all but there are significant problems.
Now I'm not talking macro-evolution which (as far as I know) is relatively well sorted out.
I've done a fair bit of micro-chemistry (though my research field is more on physical chemistry which kind of overlaps) and there are immense problems in forming cellular systems, many of which are irreducably complex, from progressive step-by-step refinement or even fortunate congruence of previously unrelated systems. There is plenty of work on inter-cellular evolution but very very little on intra-cellular evolution and the work that does exist is frankly off-topic and often poor. That's why if we can ever get funding for it my supervisor and I plan to enter this field.
I still believe evolution is our best model but it is far from perfect.

I don't mind evolutionists (hell, I believe in the theory myself). What I can't stand are Darwinists (aka, people that say evolution is teh roxx0rz and precludes the existance of a supernatural deity). You see, evolution refers to how species change, and has nothing to do with how life began (there are plenty of other theories for that).
I really don't see it.

I think these "darwinists" would refer to these hypotheses (if I'm using the word correctly) you mention, and not to evolution proper, when discounting the necessity of supernatural agency in the origin of life.

I don't see what's unreasonable about this.

In terms of philosophy, evolution could be thought of as a model, yes. As organisms increase in complexity, among other changes, through constant universal forces, the universe at large also does. Life proceeding from lifeless material could be seen as the same principle at work. Evolution as an analogue.

But science doesn't need that to preclude the existence of a supernatural entity.

Rest easy, though, that particular question can't ever be settled, if one really wants to hold on to a god of the gaps.

I think everyone kept that in mind. Separate questions.

I think that's a problematic use of language. There's no halfway with literalism.
